Hello,

Will a 2006 flywheel fit a 1989 GS500E? Heard that the 1989 through 2006 GS500's are all the same bike (engine/frame, etc.). We are rebuilding our 1989 GS and one of the magnets is cracked and detached. I found a flywheel/magnet assembly (forgive me if I don't have the terminology correct) on eBay but it's for a 2006. It looks very, very close but is not identical:

See it here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191501261920?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Perhaps I have stumped everyone (which is hard to believe with all of the knowledge up here). I guess I'll pick this up and give it a try to find out.

In case anyone is wondering, this is my son's bike. The bike over heated last fall on the track (just an amateur 'getting to know your bike day', kind of thing) and spun the balancer shaft bearing and toasted the case. It's been fun finding a new case, then matching numbers with the case, crank and balancer to determine the correct bearings. We had to find a new oil pump due to debris. Once I get the new seal and bearing kit in (and the correct flywheel) we will be ready to rebuild the engine during his Spring Break. Worse case scenario we will use the old flywheel with the cracked/detached magnet since it looks like it's been that way for a long time and can be replaced without a major engine overhaul like we are doing now. Wish us luck!
