I snapped a bolt, How f%&ked am I?

I was tightening the bolts on my front wheel, because at 80 kmh, if I let go of the handlebar, it starts shacking violently, but I was apparently too rough.

Lucky, its not a blind hole. Mark the center, Small drill bit and drill a hole half way through. Go up a size in the drill bit and it should scree right out.
You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

GS500Schultz

what he said.

also if you're shaking that means your wheel probably isn't balanced
You don't own a project bike..
The Project bike owns you!

sledge

How did you shear it off?

Did you over tighten it or was it seized in the hole?

If you over tightened it the remenant wont be stuck fast and it will probably come out with a screw-extractor or wind out with a LH drill. You might even be able to wind out by knocking it ACW with a good sharp centre punch

If it sheared while you were trying to undo it, its seized! so its the usual drill out and helicoil.....or if there is room for a washer and nut on the back you can down that road and forget about reclaiming the thread.

I wouldn't try heating it, not unless you want to repaint the leg  :D

The Buddha

Its a barely useful fitting.
Remove it and well ... just make sure your speedo cable dont get into your wheel ... as in - dont bend the crap out of it - on purpose.
The front fender has the guide for it, that should keep it in place, or put a zip tie and make sure the front bumper fitting is intact.
Cool.

And don't feel bad, I once stripped a bolt even while using a torque wrench. Misread the manual........

Err. .. not on this bike (old XR350) but i've stripped a bolt with a 8" long crescent wrench... which then allowed me to de-skin a couple knuckles on the sidestand!

Janx101

.... which prompts me to remember that extra pressure on a bolt does not substitute for actually replacing a gasket/seal!

OH THE THE KNUCKLES Hurts thinking about it!  :technical:

I forget what I was doing last, but had my knuckles run across the fins on the stupid GS. one gave me a cool scar, that may or may not go away.

Iarn

Do you y'all consider gloves when working on your babies? 😆

Janx101

Wear gloves for welding .. Not the bike, just generally .

Haven't thought of gloves for bike wrenching.... Can't think of any that are heavy enought to protect damage while light enough for sense of touch?

Iarn

Sure, there are plenty. Here in the US, at least. They're thin gloves in the fingers with a coating for grip, and rubber bits on the knuckles and top of the hand. Works pretty well against bloody knuckles and hands.

Janx101

Cool! ... so... like 80's cricket gloves then?
