Oil advice

Has anybody used Rotella t3 15w40 in their gs500? Now that my bike is running I need to change the oil. I've always ran this oil in my honda and am wondering if will work in my gs500.

Any 10w-40 or 15w-40 will be fine.

Yes. I run that sh*t in everything. My jeep, toyota pickup, yamaha x2, gs500, chevrolet v6 and my freightliner.
$15/gallon at walmart. Cheaper than I was able to get it at napa with an employee discount!
(I should really start buying it in bulk...)

My 02 GS500 has gone 100,000 miles on Rotella T 15W-40 oil.  Works for me.   

Checked compression on it last year and it had 140 psi in both cylinders.

what honda do you have? are you sure that's not too thick an oil? the recommended oil weight for my civic is 0w20.

My Fit also uses 0w-20 and my CR-V uses 5w-30, before Honda went to 0w-20 they used 5w-20, pretty sure darth_paul is talking about a Honda MC

Ok..seriously, Suzuki recommends 10w-40 because it covers the widest ambient temperature range of -20°F/-4°C to +104°F/40°C, all oil viscosity's except for 10w-30 are recommended for temperatures above 104°F/40°C. 15w-40 is good/pumpable down to roughly -15°F/-9°C. Personally, I never ride in temperatures below 30°F/-1°C. So you have to ask yourself how low of a temperature am I going to ride in? I bet you a dollar for doughnuts that 99% of us can use 15w-40 in our bikes unless you really like riding below -15°F/-9°C

OK thanks guys. I wasn't sure. I couldn't use modern automotive non diesel oil in my old v45 because it would make the clutch slip (found out the hard way). I didn't know if there was any requirements like that with these bikes. I put Rotella t3 15w40 in last night and took it for a ride, no problems. Wow this bike handles WAY better than my old sabre. Doesn't have the low end grunt but I'm happy with it.

I used Mobil 1 15W-50 full synthetic in my 97 GS for 50k miles and then went to the Heavy Duty oils using Mobil Delvac 1300 their equivelant to Rotella.  When Rotella T was tested for motorcycle use and given the JASO-MA rating for bikes with wet clutches I switched using it all the 100k miles on the 02 GS since they were the only ones to go to the time and expense to do the JASO tests.  Look for it on the can under ratings.

Not all automotive oils have the friction modifiers that can cause wet clutch slippage, last time I checked the ones that went to sae 40 like 10W-40 and heavier did not have modifiers.  Modifiers are only in the 5W-30 and lighter oils.  It's marked in a circle on the cans.  I put some Castrol GTX 20W-50 in my 100k mile 02 for a while last summer to quiet the rattling jugs that were only noticeable on very hot days.  No clutch slippage issues from it.

Used 10W-40 auto oils in my 4 old Hondas for their first couple years wear and then went to 20W-50 summers and 10W-40 winters.
