Hi all

I've got my hand on a complete cheap 97 model (engine might be older) GS500 for a project. It all works but between 3k and 5k there's a pronounced rattle especially under load. Difficult to pin-point but I would say towards the top-end. It sounds to me a bit like little end but could be anything I guess. Pretty sure it's not form the bottom (using my screw-driver stethoscope..)

I haven't checked the valve clearances yet but I'm getting over 140 psi on both cylinders (145- ish) so compression is decent.

Ant thoughts ?

Cheers

GsJack,  was that where your starter sprocket rattle apeared?

You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

No, my loose starter clutch rattle was at idle up to about 3k rpm and didn't rattle above that.  I first heard it at idle as I came to a stop.  Revved up above 3k it was gone.

I ended up pulling left, top, and right side covers looking for it.  After a little more running time it was appearant when I pulled the left side engine cover a 2nd time.

I'd look at cam chain and that infamous tensioner (though this bike is 1000 times better than most) cam end float and plain valve clearance.
And if you have to do valve adj, please get the non break away non Chinese shims sold by our famous K&L.
Cool.

I would be considering a chain/tensioner issue first also but its practically impossible to say with 100% certainty what the problem actually is from the description.
