So I started digging through my bike to nail down my fuel economy issue.

In the process I have discovered the following:

  • Water drain hole in tank clogged AF.
  • Hoses were swapped res was on, on was reserve
  • tube from fuel tap jammed into hose, came out of fuel pet chicken tap

Still can't actually pull the carb yet. Harder than expect.

WRT to the fuel tap that was broken or is now broken. I assume I should replace it instead of just putting it back 'in' . To that end I need to order a fuel chicken tap assembly and hose. Is there a reliable method to measuring the size of house w/o a caliper?

Yes, order a new petcock, they are cheap on ebay.
the line is 7mm.
1/4" is a bit tight, 5/16" is a bit loose. Look for hose with really thin walls, like 7mm id with 10 or 11mm od max.

I used 1/4 hose from a lawnmower repair place, smaller outside diameter and with some heat on the end it went on quite easily.

Quick question on the hoses then. Are the hose clamps not supposed to compensate for slightly loose line? Like the 5/16" line (inner diameter) is maybe a mil and change bigger than 7, isn't the purpose of the clamps to take care of that / hold hose that is slightly bigger on?

the issue I had was that the 5/16 hose I got was for fuel injection and was reinforced and had a huge outside diameter.  I had trouble routing the thick hoses past the airbox.

If you get a smaller hose 1/4 etc its not really necessary to use the clamps.

Or you could always buy the actual OEM 7mm lines that are pre bent for the bike.  It's bigger then 1/4" and smaller than 5/16.  I haven't found a good source of 7mm Tygon fuel line outside of OEM dealers unfortunately.

The only 7mm tubing resistant to gasoline on that site is "Crack-Resistant Tubing Made with TeflonĀ® PFA".  Problem is it's also $5.71 per foot, and is rated as "hard", so I'm not sure how well it would clamp on the fittings.

Guys.. gals.. everyone.. I have to ask a really, really dumb question.

I am not satisfied with that I have googled, and the Haynes ain't helping me.

A lot of my school studies have revolved around vales that indicate. My fuel selector (not the main shut off @ the tank), has an arrow on it, and I gotta ask, does the arrow point at what you want WRT res or fuel?

I will acknowledge that yes it does this for pri, or at least appears to, but the layout of hoses makes me question everything else.


Never mind. Took another crack at it. Apparently you folks have a dude named Kerry with good posts.

Hm. Well, not exactly 7mm, but this worked for me. Tight, but some soapy water overcame that problem.

    I have a lot of thanks to give out to a lot of you in this, and many other threads. Today I would like to update:


    • Got some hose in the suggested inner/out diameter.
    • fuel tap came in, replaced broken fuel tap
    • swapped old plugs for new ones


    I have a new concern, I may be paranoid. For lack of a better term, my cylinders sound like grasshoppers now... I don't know if I'm just hearing something that I want to hear, or am inventing new things to worry about. I am also wondering if this has to do with the new plugs.
