I bought my GS500 about a month ago and have used the info on this forum to help me set it up the way I want. The bike had been ridden but not modified, so I changed jets per the info here, put the tires on that I wanted ( thank you GSjack ), went with the gearing (15/39) that I assumed I needed from the info here, and put on the brake pads that seemed appropriate for me.
This weekend I used my time to mount these and other changes, and then went for a ride this evening. Holy Crap! What a cool bike! It's the closest thing I could find to a "do it all" bike, and for me it's perfect. My ride last weekend still had the stock jets, which made the bike surge and hesitate and make me think I'd made a bad choice. After the jetting change it pulls hard from 7 to 9 thousand very comfortably, which is all I want. My guess is that I can comfortably cruise (70) to my camping spot, and drive up the fire road confidently, camp/fish and head home with a huge smile. This is a very happy GS500 owner!

Cool, glad you like it. It's a great little bike.
Just wait until you swap out the stock suspension!

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!
