Friday of last week i was in the ER, thought i was in DKA i.e. Diabetic Keto-Acidosis. which thankfully i wasnt. got out at 01:30. so i was able to make the church temple trip at 7am in nashville. my insulin pump im having trouble with, mainly because ive hardly any body fat. so somehow have to add the fat back to my body so ive more places i can use the infusion sets. ANYHOO, this friday i see my ortho, to get the arthrodesis procedure performed on the left ankle. he wants to put a long pin up inside the tibia. i dont want to have this surgery. but ive got no choice. its either do it or i lose the ankle. my body cant handle much more in the surgery department. but if it doesnt work i lose the ankle. ( about 50% chance of success due to bone disorder. am thoroughly scared tbh. but i have to have one or the other done so i can recover and try to get back to work. have no choice in that dept. have bills that need to be paid. hadnt been able to work since july 3rd. when kept stumbling due to the neuropathy. and fractures the following month.) must get back to work. heck going nuts following docs orders. ie doing nothing. i make a few $ repairing comps, have a job lined up at old workplace installing a POS (point of sale) system. this i can do while seated. but in 2 weeks or sooner the ortho will perform the survgery. i find out friday. he may put me in hosp that day. will be there 5 days or so. wants to put a LONG screw inside the tib. which combined with bone graft, will give me the best shot at success. hoping this works so i can get back to work. no choice there either. anyhoo ill find an xray pic of that procedure showing what it will look like. anyhoo wish me luck Eh?
Anyways, wish me luck, ill need it. another matter i will discuss it with someone here. ( covering worst case scenario.) will update many more times my friends , your friend,

Basically he wants to put what's called an IM nail inside the tibia from the bottom of the ankle joint err bottom of the foot. Its roughly a foot long with holes in side for Ti screws to anchor it. Odds of success with the severe deformity aren't the greatest, but no choice there. He rebreaks Any fusion already happened, flattens I.e.. Grinds flat both the bottom end of tub and top side of the ankle bone, then uses a piece of my hip bone as a graft, also removes the shattered end of fib, and the medial (inside side) of tibia. And then nails and screws. I could just say naah.  But then my ankle will remain deformed as well as probably worsen. The hardware. Will give me a better shot. If it doesn't begin to fuse after a month, they MAY be able to redo it. But usually cannot be done. Usually ends up as a BKA ( below knee amputation) if prefer to be nailed and screwed versus being rendered a monopod. But I put it in GODS hands. Ill take whatever is best. Hell ill be out of commission for 6mos min. After 3mosill try to find some sit down work. That's a must. If health holds up. Hoping this is last surgery for a while tbh. Ink if I can handle anymore crises upstairs. Been sitting on my arise since mid August. With a 2 week break late sept.

This is what I'm up against. This is a right ankle but same planned procedure. Ex ortho should have done something sooner. CContemplating malpractice in this case tbh anyways this may help or it may it may fail.

Now ill have enough metal in me if be able to run through a metal detector nekkid Lol and set it off

I called because of pain levels, and asked if they had anything sooner. they called back about 11a today. said they had a noon and a 2:15p. i took the 2:15 after arranging a ride. ANYHOO this doc almost cursed Daaaaang, offered me a choice. do nothing and live with it. or have the procedure performed. i chose the latter. IF it is succesful it will strengthen the ankle. it will be fused at 90deg. but ill have motion in foot. until that goes out. i fear the OR because of decembers incidences, but ive no choice. got to fix it so ive a chance to get back to work, or apply for disability. may wake up with both feet or only 1 or may succumb toit. but im going to ask doc for the pieces of my leg bone.. weird? yes indeed. but having something on my comp desk that ONCE SUPPORTED ME lol.

A    MINIMUM of 4 mos before i can even consider looking for work. provided there are no complications. im dreading the cast at week 2. everytime i get a cast i end up with an infection. id be happier if they keep me in a backslab. i.e. a splint on backside of leg and under foot. if an infection sets up im screwed. this kinda frightens me tbh. will have to let him know ahead of time. about my casting history. or i can show him  the pics. the ONLY ones i didnt post here. theyre definately NSFW OR APPETITE. i go next monday and pick up my crow boot, and also have labs done for surgery. ( i.e. anasthesia types and amounts, also to see if the mrsa is still there ( it will be internally. its in remission).following week my left ankle will look like i jumped into a barrel of screws at ACE hardware. with a Ti rod up my lower leg on inside, plates and screws on outside. yay fun
:(. no choice though. will see what happens. btw ty janx. ill be in touch MYSELF hopefully afterwArds. specially when pain meds hit. will postwhore like nobodies business. i hope this is successful so i can look at getting back to work at some point. (if possible)

Think of it this way, if the worst ever happens (we all hope not), they make custom things for bikes for amputee riders. . .

Morbid? Yes. Technically a silver lining to a very dark squall line. . .

or make a keychain out of it. it would totally weird someone out. or for extra weird points, make a ring out of it lol. and say only that "this ring once held up  a percentage of me." and nothing else. (for a while) let them guess. id say hed do it. if he grafts bone it will be either artificial or a piece from my hip..

Always remember that older British bikes had the gear change and rear brake reversed. so you could probably ride one of those with suitable modifications to the brakes. As for the other, I'm sure your doctors are doing their best, and you just have to be (a lot more) patient and hopefully it will all  be over soon.

Good luck.

Back on bikes and loving it.

Hes talkin plates and screws and an IM nail/rod and more screws. i just want the removed bone. ill place it beside my mastodon tooth. and other fossils lol. 2 weeks from yesterday after the anaesthesia wears off life will suck unless the painkillers are good. got a feeling ill be on self admin trigger. i.e. push a button get dosed. cant push again for at least 15 mins or something like that. only thing that worries me is the cast. my body and casts just dont play nice together. if i gotta have one i guess ive no choice. but an infection developing under neath it could be lethal this time around. will just have to let them know about it.

I wonder if ii could use my crow boot im picking up monday in place of a cast? ehh if not will just have to ask them to allow a tiny bit of extra room on both the medial (inside) and lateral  <----------------especially outside, this is where he  said hed be doing most of the work  from.

thing keeps swelling. then going back down. but i go in monday to hosp for a CBC (complete blood count) as well as anaesthesia testing. ( to find out what workss best) then to figure out what to put in the post op pain pump. (depending on outcome, whether i have the metal put into ankle or worst case, i lose ankle.) also find out the extent of the damage to ligaments and tendons. may ask doc if theyy can run a CT scan on it. radiographs/xray, usually dont show this. just fractures.  if/when i survive this, i WILL lodge a formal complaint maybe even a malpractice case against former ortho. ( if attorneys think ive got a case.)
anyhoo that is the latest update. after this, i go pick up my crow boot. which MIGHT allow me to not have to use a cast. hoping lol. an infection there is the LAST thing i need right now. anyways heres looking forward to climbing out of this hole, recovering and moving forward.

Getting my affairs in order on the slim chance it doesnt end well for me. im asking my surgeon to also repair any ligament or tendon damage the ex ortho didnt even check for. 3 things will happen. well one of 3.
1. ankle is salvageable. they call it limb salvage for a reason. a Ti plate and screws takes care of shattered fib. and a Ti nail called an IM nail ( Intra-Medullary) is put in THRU the talus ( the ankle bone itself and into the Tibia)  and secured with Ti (titanium) screws  . surgeon removes a segment of 3 bones the tib, the fib, and the talus to make a flat surface along with remnants of cartilage and bone fragments. and this is called ankle arthrodesis. i.e. it fuses ankle at 90deg. will no longer have movement at ankle. but will retain movement of foot bones for a few years. this is by far the best outcome. the desired outcome. the hardware also strengthens the bone and grafting allowing a stronger fusion. barring infection or non union ill be able to walk in 6mos.
2, is second worst outcome. a below knee amputation.. if he decides its not salvageable at this point. BUT id end up with a prosthetic, i COULD with either an airshift conversion, or a jockeyshift/handclutch, or a heel-toe shifter conversion, i could ride on 2 wheels again.
3. i dont wand 3rd option. AT ALL this would be that i dont survive it. as i said heck no !. 'nuff said.
now after i survive this, im going to check with a malpractice atty. if ive got a good case, my next move is a malpractice suit against former ortho. who had months to do something yet didnt. if this happens and i win, EJ will be repaid tenfold. and gstwin will benefit too.
if they say i dont, thats life. i will still figure out how to repay EJ ( will let him set terms on that. i promise i wont put myself in any deeper of a financial bind im already in. ANYHOO, IF worst case happens, will have someone here post last message from me. this arrangement has already been made.
will send message and details a couple days beforehand via pm. BUT ive no intentions of checking out. heck im as stubborn as my mother GOD rest her soul. anyhoo love yall. more updates to come ibpromise.

I know it sounds weird, but im looking forward to this. almost excited. because barring anything unknown being messed up this will repair anything wrong physically  with me. then i work on rebuilding. the unknowns are the muscles and tendons and ligaments. those usually dont show on xrays. old ortho never checked this. hell never did anything for it tbh. new guy is going to remove the pieces that are loose, and clean it out before preparing it for fusion. ( im asking for the bone he takes out. a souvenir if you will. to make something out of it. or to set beside my mastodon tooth. or may keep it in formaldehyde. idk. heck idk if hell let me keep it lol. but if he does..... then or if it succeeds i spend a few mos rebuilding what was destroyed.  and am able to put this behind me and move on with life.  :)
Anyhoo thats it for now. more to come.
Oh bonus if they will allow it, i want to video myself as anaesthesia takes effect. may youtube that lol.
