What is the size limit for uploads?  I got denied on a 290 KB picture, says it is too big.

You have to use another imaging source. Try Photobucket or something similar.

The forum has a limit of storage, if I understand correctly.

As Big Rich stated, the best alternative is to use an image hosting site and then img tag from that, such as Imgur or Photobucket.
