Here's the result of 15-20 minutes of fingernail, knife, and shop-towel scraping.

Any ideas?

Depending on your budget you could replace those rubber bits with new ones.  Your bike might be too new to worry about the boots cracking...  But maybe the PO was trying to resolve a vacuum leak... I can't think of a sensible reason to slather silicone like that except if a leak is suspected and the PO have zero craps about ever servicing the bike again.

There are plenty of chemical based silicone removers on the market  :thumb:

You have it clean enough. Don't bother with any of those chemicals.

I would want it spotless, imagine if a sliver peeled off got sucked in and went for a trip through the carb and into the jets  :dunno_black:

Your bike.......your call  :thumb:

In the air tract - no worry.
In the float instead of a gasket - oh yea it will find its way to the pilot.

Could it find its way under a float valve?

Not unless its in the float bowl gasket.
Which I have seen people do BTW.

In the float bowl??!

That would be awful!

I'm pretty sure most of that is tank-rust, but considering the mixture screw was also coating in sealant, I wouldn't be surprised if some of it made it into the bowls

The Buddha

Yea rust. Stick a magnet in there, you should get all of it out with no scrubbing, then hit it with wd40 and a toothbrush.
Cool.
