was a wet mountain road

the chain came off the bike still runs but not sure if i can get it into nuetral or not started it with clutch in the cut engine off
can i pull the old/twisted chain off then run the bike safely while i check things out without doing more damage?

it ran for a min with the clutch in then cut out theres mud everywhere am thinking front airfilter might be problem since like i said its coverd in mud so any tips on cleaning and i mean deep cleaning to get this mud and dirt out without messing things up more would be greatly apreciated

also i think the sprockets look ok but keep hearing people say if  i am having to buy a new chain to just replace those at the same time any info on this would be great

i havent had a chance to find a owners manual or the buy the clymore so if anyone has links to online copys or a cheap place to buy them i would really appreciate that

i am gonna be needing allot of info tips and help trying to get it back to a safe daily driver the bike was supposed to be a present for my gf's kid but now i am thinking its a good thing its winter so instead of a new to her bike she gets a project to learn on with her moms boyfriend
i cant spend a ton of money so dont want the fanciest shinest parts but do want to make it a really safe daily driver she can use after winter

one of the last bikes i owned was a 74 harley and this is nothing like it i feel fairly clueless

if i can get my camera charged or find a smartphone around ill try to get some good pics to show the bike dmg etc

its a 1991 gs500em

chains go from around 30 bucks to over 200 so not sure what would be best same for the sprockets

First things first, how are you? Welcome to the forum!
tbh i wouldnt run the bike at all until its thoroughly cleaned off. also if it were me, id replace the sprockets if they are worn (to a point)

Yep, thorough clean. If the sprockets aren't too worn just put a new cheap-ish chain on it so you can run it and see how it is, then later you can put on new sprockets and o-ring or x-ring chain set.
No point spending big bucks on o-ring chain until you know the bike is going to be good. Check the LHS for any damage caused by the chain breakage too.
Beam me up Scottie....

Welcome.  Hope you're alright.  My advice is to check the motorcycle thoroughly before getting back on it.  If the chain failed the same day you bought it I would be suspicious that the bike has some other fatal flaw.

Whether the motorcycle has been abused or not, I recommend that you be cautious about jumping on strange bikes.  If you don't feel like checking the bearings, checking the torque on all suspension bolts, and inspecting the frame, hardware, and suspension then you really should take your motorcycle to a mechanic for a thorough checkup.

For instance, do your axle nuts have cotter pins in place?

Seems  to me if you want to stay alive you should put a high priority on ensuring your motorcycle is road-worthy.  This same-day broken chain business is a red flag.  What is the story behind this motorcycle, do you have pictures?? (You'll have to upload them to a hosting site like imgur and link to them in your posts)

Great, another post with no punctuation. I don't bother reading the rest when I when I start having to figure out where one sentence ends and another begins.
Why are you looking here?

I'm not bothered as long as i can understand after a reasonable time.......not everyone is as edacated as me.  :)

omg if this was a mmorpg i could understand the grammer police but whatever i type how i talk if people cant figure it out then there not people i wanna talk to

its a medical condition not an uneducated thing but think what you like just would rather people keep negative comments to themselves if you don't like my post or the way i type or spell move on

saila

thanks for the welcome so far yall are allot nicer than the Harley folks its been over 5 years but i got hate mail etc from them elitists im sorry but i don't care where the parts come from or if they were made by the same company that originally made the motorcycle etc if there's safer better parts out there im gonna go with the safer better parts weather its the same brand or not

i haven't been able to get pics or get back on the computer much the pain set in and have just been in bed
as far as motorcycle wrecks go i should have known better than to ride in those conditions with a new to me bike and not the right gear ie leather jacket and good riding pants but all in all i feel i was lucky 5 days earlier a tractor trailer flipped in the same spot taking out the guardrail

so i just had the pavement then the mud/gravel to slide into rather than a guardrail to slam into i think that would have been much worse

lil bout me names Doug am on autism spectrum so tend to not get when people are joking and tend to be blunt or mean when not meaning to
also have turrets before you start saying i shouldn't ride i don't drive a car and have only ever rode motorcycles my tics aren't something people notice or something that would effect being able to drive a motorcycle
that being said i am constantly being interrupted by them in my mind it makes it damn near impossible to try and write so i type super fast
i rarely use grammar if i use any its because i have to blurt it all down fast , there's nothing i can do about it so if bad spelling or lack of grammar is a big prob for ya just stay clear of anything i post ,

i cleaned the bike up a lil it shifts nice again and is easy to know its in neutral the chain is still hanging off
i need to figure out how to just remove the chain is what i am thinking

and i like the idea of buying a cheaper chain for now then buying the new sprockets and a good performance chain when the weather warms up
that will give me time to save up for the good stuff

i really wanna clean it up more and get pics of the sprockets and well everything so i can get yalls advice on fixing er up i am hoping if its just being rolled around and run on the center stand etc that one of the cheap chains will be ok and hoping the sprockets are good enough for that aswell

when i went to a parts site the cheap ones that came up for my model said up to 100cc so yeah i don't know why those chains come up when you search for a gs500em

oh and a big question i have is about the model number if someone could just respond or shoot me an email i would really appreciate it i want to get the clymer for the bike but the one i found doesn't say em and the title says its a 91 gs500em  so is the e and em the same? or am i looking at the wrong manual etc
the one i was looking at on ebay is Clymer Repair Manual for Suzuki GS500 Twins 1989-2002 i think thats the right one for this bike
but dont want to buy it and be wrong since it doesn't say it covers gs500em

here is a pic of the chain it looks like it got twisted/bent where the chainguard connects to the frame so yeah guess the chainguard and my laying it down killed the chain

i think everything else is good sept that lil side plate there arent any scews etc fot it i am not sure how your supposed to install em but it was missing when i got the bike was hoping i could just get a piece of metal the right shape and size paint it black and then paint the firefighters symbol on it instead of saying suzuki

eck well pick o sprocket wont let me upload here or says talk to admin i dunno maybe i can link it on fbook

It's not a matter of grammar police, it's a matter of understanding what you're saying. The clearer your post, the more/better help you can get. The punctuation really is there for a reason.

What kind of medical condition keeps you from typing punctuation (sincerely; not sarcasm)?

Glad to hear you are alright.

EXACTLY  .  ive played MMORPGs as well for over a decade, beginning with planetside, that being said, even if the grammar  could be considered not the best, who cares, his message was clear enough. for those raising hell over this TRIVIAL matter, say nothing and move on Eh?. Ok now ill get off my soapbox and say as ive said, i would not start the engine until the mud is GONE. Also, consider changing the oil once mud is cleaned off . ( in case engine ingested anything it shouldnt have.) now moving forward/onwards, If it were me, id replace chain and sprockets at same time. ALSO check the driveline alignment. you can buy a tool for this or you can make one using a wire coathanger and a ziptie. its as accurate as the tool is yet loads cheaper.   ? the question mark is nearly how its shaped. ziptie goes on the straight part of wire is trimmed to maybe an inch in length, and end pointing away in same direction as the turn in wire. and trimmed to point. Now that i think about it  ignore the qquestionmark shape. what youre checking is distance between centre of pivot shaft and centre of rear axle.     coathanger wire straightened end bent at 90deg , and length after bend maybe 1.5 inches. trimmed ziptie faciing same direction. this is done after chain and sprockets are mounted. Forgive me but this phone of mine will not allow me to post my drawings of the tool. anyhoo im getting ahead of myself. thats one of the later things youll do. ill find a picture of one of these homemade tools and it will show you the ideal look :)

For those questioning 'conditions' .. post 11 in thread has a short explanation (thanks for sharing it too Doug!) .. which I at least noticed. .. AND BTW,  isn't a requirement of posting how/when/where in this forum! ... but it was shared by OP freely :thumb:

The angst over the grammar- unnecessary.  If y'all claim to have such superior grammar then you also have the smarts to add it in mentally and sort the posts out so it makes sense! .. :thumb:

Most respondents in this thread have achieved this situation without picky dramas.

Doug, hope your aches are disappearing fast and the repairs go easily! :thumb:

Well said. im adding Punctuation to this segment because it fits as well as grammar. i would dig up the phaedrus thread, but its a sticky and easily found.
sorry quoting a segment of janx' reply.

Flaming as a whole has no place here. Even has a hard time finding an open ear in the TF.
this  is my opinion here >, but calling out someone for trivial matters doesnt need to happen. the key word is TRIVIAL. or as my grandmother said decades ago, " if you cannot say anything nice, then say nothing."Now lets Re-rail, this De-railed thread. " and figure out the best way the OP can repair his bike, without driving him into the poorhouse Eh?
