Yes my friend it hurts alot less to drop a bike that has a few battle scars on it versus  one thats looking like new. first thing the MSF course taught me after the Importance of the Safety gear, the first thing on the bike they taught us was the clutch. and clutch walk. ( get on bike with gear on) start engine, keeping hand  off of throttle, depress clutch, and slowly let it out until it starts to grab.. after a bit of this, same thing, putting bike in gear and slowly letting it out til it starts to grab, squeezing again (repeat), then same thing, but this time slowly letting lever out til it starts to grab, and you will walk the bike. ( the clutch walk) r hand off throttle but covering brake ;). this will get her/kid used to bikes clutch. minimises surprises :). anyhoo im getting ahead of myself. this tool you CAN buy them, but making out of coathanger and ziptie does same thing. its used to set rear wheel alignment. chain alignment will take care of itself. rear sprocket should be in middle of chain. plus youll be setting chain tension while doing this anyways. ;)

If the coathanger ziptie combo ( cost maybe 25 cents and is as accurate as commercially made tools ;)  ) if you want to make it a bit easier, ( a tad more expensive maybe a few dollars total) could pick up a section of stiff wire from a home improvement/hardware store. i dont have access to a gs500 to measure the exact length needed. if i can find the info via google ill post it here. just get a piece longer than needed. you can always remove length. just cannot add it back. anyhoo, will try to find the info. Nowaitaminute, youve got a gs lol. just measure distance between centre of swingarm pivot bolt and end of swingarm. you take stiff wire, bend one end 90 deg, the short end (after bend id make it 2" in length. long end to end of swingarm. ziptie is adjusted to proper length. its nearly impossible to mess this up.

P.s ill draw up a schematic of this. then post it here.
