Knocking noise - while in gear

Hi All

So randomly one afternoon on my way home from work my bike began to make a not soft but not loud knocking noise while in gear. To be clear, when the bike is idling I can rev the engine to 8000rpm and not at all will the knocking sound. ONLY when the bike is in gear and I begin to move the bike forward does the knocking sound happen every 3 seconds or so. It happens in every gear and I can hear it basically until the exhaust becomes louder than the knock and I can't tell if it is still knocking. I've also recently reset my valve clearance to spec, tighten the cam chain and made sure the camshafts didn't have any play to slide back and forth in the journals. The noise is still there :dunno_black:

This leads me to believe its not the engine making the noise but something in the drive train. Has anyone had this issue before? I've heard a sticky chain or sprocket missing a tooth could cause such a sound. My hope is its not a gear missing teeth. Someone please help me find some answers to this problem.

Thanks!

Drivetrain likely to make noise more than every 3 seconds I think... nothing in there moves that slowly!

Muffler mount bolt tight like it should be?

Battery not jumping around in its box?

Swingarm/rear shock smooth and catch free?

.... other?

Does the knocking sound change in frequency as you move faster, or as the engine revs change? If the former, then the drivetrain would be suspect: if the latter, then the engine components. If neither, then I would suspect something like the battery rattling or some other part on the bike is loose.

Or at least that is where I would look first.

Good luck.
Back on bikes and loving it.

I had a similar experience at one point.  What I found in my particular instance was that my chain tension had gotten pretty bad.  Along with all of the kinked links that it already had, I found that it would bounce pretty bad at times and would actually make contact with the bike.  Still not exactly sure if it was knocking the center stand, or bouncing into something else, but once I installed my new chain and sprockets, set tension to spec, the noise was gone (and the bike was smoooooooth too!).

Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil

Sorry folks, the holiday seasons got me busy these days. Thanks a lot for the advice!!

I want to rule out any other possibility before I go buying a new chain and sprockets as that will run me near $200.

It actually has begun to happen about every second or so. The knocking also does sound quicker as the engine revs higher and the speed is increasde as if the knocks are matching the revolutions of the engine. Does this sound familiar to a bad rod bearing? I kinked chain and worn sprockets could be culprit but I'm convinced the knock is coming from the engine.
