Bike Security

I was thinking the other day of having some sort of deterance on the bike when left alone and out of sight (usually at a mall). I noticed the bike shops have disc rotor locks for $30-$70.  Wouldn't a cut resistant pad-lock on the rotor work just the same?   Not only that, you can also add another one to make it even more fun, or place on on the rear rotor as well.

And lets assume that they DO break the ignition switch with a screwdriver, and get the bike going, they may not realize the locks are on the rotors , causing a sudden stop; maybe  a spill. I'd take a dropped bike before NO bike any day.

Granted the risk is minimal here, I just dont want to leave the bike secured by the igniton lock alone, and having something tiny and out of the way to secure it with.

I know if someone really wants something they will get it come hell or high-water. Just the point of them having to work trough one or 2 more locks may make it not worth their trouble.

Any other ideas?

I suppose rotor locks would at least prevent someone from rolling the bike away.  The GS is so light that two or three fit people could probably lift it into truck-bed without even rolling it.

Rotor locks scare me because no matter how on the ball you are, you will one day forget the lock is on and twist the throttle... *crunch*   ... there goes a few hundred bucks and your dignity

When I want to immobilize my bike I carry a nice, beefy, braided bike cable lock.  I run it through the rear wheel and up over the seat, so that there is no way that I can start to ride off with it still in place.

just a thought.

also remember to leave it in gear so it's alot harder to push. Also turn the wheel and use the key to put the bike in "lock" mode.[ turn the ignition key all the way to the left] if someone tried to take a "joy ride" they will be going in circles :thumb:

I use a bicycle lock combo on the wheels. Their bright red so hopefully I don't crunch them up and lose dignity

:?  That would have to be one LAZY theif to not want to put the effort into tapping the toe-shifter into neutral...    :P

and yes.. lock the front forks... good call  :thumb:

in Atlanta, the    :guns:  thieves come along in a van and just pick up the bike and throw it in the van. they got 3 bikes in my neigborhood. i used one of those kryptonite (i think) locks that are made of solid links kind of like a sausage encased in plastic. i think its called cobra? prolly $50-60. I locked it to my deck. i think thats why they never bothered stealing mine.  my friend locked a trailer up in his yard with one of those cable locks. after he lost the key,  he took a 18 volt sawzall to it, went through it in seconds.

what about those bike alarms? the kind that scream like a banshee if the bike is tilted off the sidestand, or sat on, or bumped, or looked at funny?
If you think you can, don't. Many things start with "I think I can," and end with "Ow!"

I think rather than any sort of deterance, just park in high visibility areas, and hope to god it doesnt get jacked. tHere isnt a ton you can do I dont find. I know the GS is so light it can easily be picked up. I watched my dad single handedly lift my GS onto a dolly so we could more easily roll it around the garage. I think if someone wants its bad enough, they are going to get it. not much you can do.

More security is never a bad idea...
I have a disk lock, and a yellow lamited sticker across my handlebars center that says "UNLOCK DISC LOCK" in red letters. I use the steering lock too.

Personally I prefer tying an 85 lb Rotteiler to the bike on a slip-knot.
Never had a problem.

...or maybe even a RottWeiler!!!

My friend didn't have the reminder chord on his bike, and he dumped it while tyring to move around the parking lot.

Just don't forget to take em off!! :x

There are disc locks that let off a warning sound when you try to move or tilt the bike with it attached. Spiffy.  :thumb:

EDIT: And here's a link.

interesting. i wonder, what kind of batteries do these things take, and how long do they last?

never mind. perhaps they take 6 LR44's, like the page says. man, those sound expensive to replace...

this is part of the reason I bought a gs.  my buddy bought a 03 r6, it lasted about 6 months, left it alone for about 4 hours and poof it was gone. every day I remind him I still have my bike.

Instead of a disc lock try source a grip lock.  It clips onto the throttle and front brake lever - nice and visible and no risk of embarresement and damage normally associated with disc locks.
