I can tell when the carbs are getting dirty by the way the bike runs. So far I've been cleaning them about once a year when I bring the bike out for a spring tune up. I intend to install a fuel filter soon so I don't have to clean them as much.
If u install an additional filter please let us know how it went;pics/link/feedback.

Cleaned mine and I have put an inline filter in.  It's big and ugly and will be removed once it's had a couple of tanks of fuel through it to flush the tank a little. This all after it has sat idle for almost 3.5 years.

Never. 1/4 pint of seafoam in the tank every month (roughly every 1500 miles), avoiding cheap fuel, and never leaving the bike for more than a couple of weeks without turning it over means I'm 100k miles in on a Bandit without ever having to clean the carbs.

Storing your bike inside is a big part of the equation, bikes left outside at night and for storage have a harder row to hoe  :thumb:
