I just got my Bike back from the shop (just had a basic inspection and got the fork realigned) and when I picked it up it was raining and now there is a little bit of condensation behind of green plastic of the neutral light. This probably has nothign to do
with my issue though.

I just took it out for a ride and almost immediately I had issues by shitfting into neutral at traffic lights instead of 1st gear. I thought I was in first gear but I was actually in neutral. I didnt notice this when I i picked it up from the shop yesterday. Might just be because a coincidence though. I rode back home and tested the light by shifting while standing still. Most of the time it does come on and if it doesnt I can turn it on by sligthy releasing the clutch.

So basically my problem is that the neutral indicator doesnt want to work while the bike is moving and sometimes even when its standing still.

Bummer.

Are you sure the condensation behind the plastic isn't affecting your light?  You might try pulling the bulb and making sure everything is clean and dry.

I dont think it is. The light isnt broken since it does light up under certain conditions.

No, Lucas was referring to some possible corrosion at the base of the bulb.

But it could also be water / corrosion at the wire lead..... the one coming up from the engine. Can't tell you where that connection is on a GS500 though - sorry.

If possible before u start have a spare bulb handy, just in case everything else in the electrical system checks out fine.
