Is the kickstand weldable?

Not much of a project but I figured it belonged here rather than the main forum. Long story short just got back into riding. Bought a 91 gs500e and notices today that the kickstand is missing the peg that you can hook with your boot. So, me being the cheap and crafty guy I am, ID rather weld on a little tab myself rather than replacing the kickstand all together. So, what is the kickstand made put off? I doubt aluminum but just wanna be sure.

Does a magnet stick to it? Then you can weld on it with any old welder.

Hi Draken! Welcome to the forum  :D

No aluminum there, that's for sure. Took mine off a year or so ago to sand it and paint it cuz it was getting rusty and that's a no no for sure  :nono:

I even remember seeing a thread around here somewhere that showed how to modify the length of the kickstand, done by welding.

Totally agree, that would be irritating to not have the little tab!!!

Hi Draken, welcome to the forum. The kickstand is steel and the General Discussion area is definitely the appropriate place for this question.

Lately there have been a few people asking general questions in this part of the forum an the mods haven't been moving the posts so it kinda makes it look like this is a Q&A section.

Ok, thank you guys. Figured it was steel but didn't wanna start trimming and then getting screwed.

You can weld to it even if it was aluminum. If there is a metal you cant weld to, I'd guess its the cases, which are pot metal. However I have had great success welding to the savage engine cases as well as the MZ one.

Anyway it would have to be made of wood before I'd venture you guess you cant weld it.

Cool.

i got tired of mine sinking into soft surfaces so i took a car break pad and welded it to it, then just made it look pretty with a grinder, problem solved
if you plan to fail do you still fail to plan?

Actually if it was cast , even if it was steel, welding it would not be a great idea as it tends to crack or at least weaken unless you heat the whole item. Same for some forged one ( yes there are forged kickstands).
But the GS ones are welded steel and you can cut and weld to you little hearts content.
