My gas tank on my GS has rusted through in one spot.  :x

Anyone tried a tank liner such as Kreem...that lines the inside with plastic???
Supposedly won't harm the paint......
My bike is custom painted so I really don't want to have to get another tank.

Any advice/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!!!

I used a product made by POR15 on my Gs450.  It has only been a few months, but in the first few days, I noticed it had worked better than the gas tank patch for cars that I had tried a week before.  The full kit costs about $35.00 at my local cycle salvage shop(the dealer doesn't even know what I am talking about).  You pretty much use the cleaner, the etcher, and then the sealer as the directions say.  The only downside I know of is that you cannot use and additives with Touline(if I remeber right, if you want to know, I'll check) because they break down the sealer.  As long as you seal up the take right before putting in the sealer(masking take with lots of care, or duct take with less), it shouldn't affect your paint.

I've heard that the POR 15 kit is the better one.  I think on this site.

I am having mine repaired by a local rad shop .. they do tanks for some of the local bike shops and were recommended to me.  They are cleaning and sealing the tank for $65 CAN.  That way I don't have to mess with chemicals and figure out how to dispose of them.

They are also doing some other work too which is on top of the $65.  They are going to strip all the paint off too and fill some of the bigger holes with solder.  He could have saved the paint but I wanted it stripped off.

Go with the POR-15 kit....essentially the same cost and a better product. I've done more than a half dozen tanks with it and It's worked great.

Thanks much for the advice and the link. I live out in the sticks and have to order on-line.

Is 1 kit enough to do the tank on my GS???

I used POR-15 and have been quite pleased with the results so far.

Yes 1 kit will be more than enough- 1 kit will do a 6-6.5 gallon tank (I did a ZX11 D tank and they are a good bit bigger than a Gs500e  tank)

Follow the directions --- it's pretty easy  just be thorough and patient.

I tried the Kreem a few years ago.  Application was pretty easy, but it flaked a bit, and I have heard this happen to others.  Maybe it was my technique, but I would try that POR stuff mentioned by the above members.
