has anyone fabricated an exhaust bracket mount before?

I modified my bike into a cafe racer and grinded off all the excessive mounts on the frame, including the passenger pegs with the exhaust bracket. The idea was to go with a cone muffler instead, but as it turns out, the bike performs poorly with those types of exhaust. I would like to get an aftermarket exhaust, either yoshimura, deklevic, or vance and hines - if i could find one somewhere.

The problem is - I don't have any brackets for the exhaust muffler to hold it up. Has anyone successfully attempted come up with a way to hold their muffler up with something other than the stock exhaust brackets? Any ideas?

In the 90's we used to get those muffler carriers without rear pegs for all sport bikes, GSXR's ZX7's. You should be able to bolt ont of those on, and have it carry the exhaust and look stupid

I'm assuming you scrapped the pieces you cut off, it would be a simple matter to reattach the bracket you cut off.

It might be possible to get your hands on a replacement passenger peg and hanger, and just weld it back on.  Or it would be simple for a machine shop to mimic.  Just a little A-frame looking thing made of half inch square pipe with a round hole on the end, basically.
A machine shop might charge you $50 to fab, if they're nice they might even weld it onto the bike for you as well.  Then all you gotta do is grind the welds down to make it look nice and paint it.

Unfortunately, the way the exhaust is routed the only access to frame you have is at the mid-pipe under the engine and where the factory hanger is.  Maybe you could get away with some kind of plate attaching to the same spot the footpegs bolt on, but it would be easy to do it wrong and end up with a hanger that is neither sturdy nor good to look at.

What is it about a cone exhaust that causes the GS to run poorly?  Is this from your experience?

It's not immediately apparent to me why a cone-style exhaust would run fine on other similar bikes but not this model.  Perhaps someone can explain.

Maybe needs ridiculously large jets or something.

No GS that is stock engine and stock carbs needs larger than 150's.
You may have the cone flow a lot less and hence need smaller ... dunno, show pics of it if you can.
I can guarantee you with enough time and trial runs if I had the bike, I'd get it running perfect. The problem is usually getting from feel and observation to a jet size takes a lot of communication via this forum, and there is always something lost.

There should be enough meat on the sub frame to accommodate drilling and tapping. (IIRC there is already a hole drilled and tapped into the bottom of each side of the sub-frame that may be in the right location for you - I dont know what it is for but I know there is one on mine)  That would seem like the easiest approach and then get some aluminum or steal round bar and bend to fit your application and then add some attachment points to the round bar with some tube or flat stock.

I bought a yoshi pipe from a gsxr750 from a guy on CL that ruined his engine for $40, attached it to my pipes and held it in place with this http://www.lowes.com/pd_301965-26043-301965_1z10xw2__?productId=3736679&pl=1 its temporary just to get me back on the road until i can figure out how to make it look nice and factory.

Not trying to steal your thread or anything, but im interested in suggestions on how to make an exhaust mount as well if anyone has any suggestions.

I got a cone muffler and haven't had any performance issues.  I got new jets and it runs perfect.

I mounted the muffler off the right side boot guard by running two holes through the chrome guard and bending a chrome steel strap that was provided with the muffler and it looks very slick.

I got my muffler from ryca.com

If you give me some measurements of where you want to mount it I could CAD something up that you could take to a machine shop. Probably mounting on the arm with the brake caliper would be the cleanest/smallest bracket. Probably want to avoid drilling it just in case but you could get something done to pinch it with a little rubber to dampen any vibrations from the frame.

I'm looking at a yosh pipe too so I could reuse the design for mine when I finally get around to it.
