Hey guys; just wondering if you could offer some advice. I just bought my first bike, a 2008 gs500, originally an F but now naked. The guy I bought it off hadn't run it in 3 years and it was written off before that for fairing and front end damage (since fixed). So far I've changed the battery, spark plugs and will be doing an oil and filter changes asap. I still need to replace the chain, sprockets, mirrors, bar ends and brake pads, and I'm planning on getting some frame sliders. Does anyone have any tips on OEM vs aftermarket or links to parts you've used and had good experiences with? I'm from Australia and am a little bit handy in the garage so installation isn't an issue for me. Thanks in advance.

Where is Aus are you.
Check if you are happy with the overall gearing before you buy the chain. There are several easily available countershaft sprocket sizes to get you happy. If you can afford it get a supersprox stealth rear sprocket. They are quieter and outlast almost anything else as well as significantly lighter than all steel ones.
There are now alloy flat bars available in Aus if that's your preference especially now the gs is unfairied. http://thirdgear.com.au/drag-handlebars-22-mm-aluminium/ otherwise renthal ultralows. The stock bars are very heavy and tend to rust badly.
Keep an eye on the tank protector if fitted. They can get severe rust under them.

3 years not run huh....depends if the PO "laid it up" properly. That means turning "off" the tanks fuel tap and storing the bike in a dry/sheltered place....if not your probably gonna have to clean the carbs.
Firstly, when your ready see if it starts and how it runs.
eBay is a good place for parts,so is Partzilla if u need OEM.Generally Oz dealers are more expensive, but shop around first before going overseas(saves time)

PS...Metalgear also makes decent parts:
