Random ticking noise and gearing problems

Hey guys.
I've recently had my bike serviced, including valve adjustments, carb tuning and a timing checkup. It's been about a week and a half and I already clocked more than 1K KM on her. Bike's been running great at first, performed great on long trips, and there's been a little ticking sound after a ride when idling (but gone as soon as I continue driving), and it appeared on random occasions as well, plus when I twisted the throttle a bit a few times when in idle I heard a click from the engine, as if it's not smoothly opening.
Today it got a little worse, with the ticking sounding a bit mechanical (I don't have a better word), throttle response is OK but the gears are a bit stiff (mainly going to 1st, second or neutral, others are fine). Oil levels are ok.

Is this a clutch problem? Throttle cable? What could it be?

Could be just valves/shims moving around. Normal if adjusted with wider clearance.

The mechanic told me they were really closed up so he adjusted them for bigger clearence.

I would be going back to the mechanic, telling him of my concerns and expecting an answer.

It might be down to something he has done, it might not be, but if it is and you start interfering with the things he has done he will be very reluctant to accept any responsibility.

Take it back to the mechanic by all means. But there may be things you can do to track down the problem in the meantime. - It's rather vague from your description so I doubt anybody here would be able to help you with the info supplied.

So do some tests to try to narrow it down:
Does it happen when cold and/or when hot.
Does it happen when stationary as well as when moving.
Does it happen when you accelerate, or decelerate.
Does it happen when you're moving whether in gear, or out of gear (coasting in neutral).
Does it happen in all gears.

Get a long screwdriver, start the bike and put the handle hard against your earlobe then move the tip around pressing against various areas of the engine, this can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
Try to think... is it a rattle, is it a rustle, is it a knock, is it a tapping, is it a grinding sound? Use your ear and your head.
Does it rise and fall in frequency with the engine revs or the road speed?
Etc, etc etc...

BTW, Your mechanic needed to adjust the valves for the CORRECT clearances, not "bigger clearance". Typically, if the clearances are too large the top end of the motor will sound rattly/rustly, and the noise will tend to be less when the motor is warm.
Sounds too much of a co-incidence to me, i'd be torqueing the headbolts down to factory spec and then re-adjusting the valve clearances.
Beam me up Scottie....
