What size jets and where to buy them?

Hey guys,

I haven't had much time to fiddle with my bike lately, since we have had super hot humid weather and surprise storms every time I get off of work. Today, I finally messed around with it and found that it is running on one cylinder at idle (oddly enough it still sounds OK, but then again I don't know what one is supposed to sound like). After a bit of fiddling, I have narrowed it down to the carbs. I have swapped sides with the plugs and coils, but the problem stayed on the right cylinder. Pulling the left wire during idle would kill it, while pulling the right would not change anything. Pulling the the right wire at 4-5k rpm, however, the bike would still run, but you could tell a pronounced change. I also did a compression test while it was hot, and it is getting just above 130 on both cylinders.

So, at this point the carbs are going to come off and go through a deep cleaning. My thoughts are "Hey, since I have them off anyway, why not drop on a lunchbox and a re-jet". I found the suggested sizes for a lunchbox and stock exhaust on the wiki, but have no clue where to buy them, or what to ask for. So....

1. Are jets interchangeable between all carbs (standardized?) or do you have to know EXACTLY what you need? Where is the best place to order them?

2. Since everyone says re-jetting usually is trial and error until you find the sweet spot, how does one make this as cost effective as possible? Like buying several different sizes of jets to try? Some "kits" I have seen online are around 60 bucks, so if I buy a few of these I could easily waste $120 on jets I do not need.

3. Since my exhaust is buggered up anyway I was thinking about doing what this fellow did: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=70758.0
My question being, is this a weld on, clamp on, or what?? Also, what would the life expectancy be on one of these? I know it is cheap, but it has to be better than the butchered mess I am running now. You can see one of my previous posts for a picture of my exhaust.
I am an a**hole. I have accepted this, and come to peace with it

The Buddha is the expert on Jets and sells kits, I believe. I've read a few hundred posts and a hundred threads on jetting here. You'll have to invest some time reading and searching on the forum to find your answers.

You can buy jets from Buddha, jetsrus, or motorcyclecarbs. Here's a few links to get you started. Just trying to give back to the forum that's helped me a great deal.

Thank you very much for the links. Can you verify that the exhaust was clamped or welded?

Initially, I just wanted to clamp it down. If I had the right tools, I would've cut and clamped it down at home myself. I took it to a muffler shop and they stated the angle of where I wanted to cut the pipe and slip the pipe on wouldn't allow them to simply clamp it. So I had it welded on.
