2002 starter question

starter does not turn the bike over
it looks like it engages but does not develop enough power to turn the engine over
it's not the solenoid
can you take out the starter thorough the top or do you have to
to take off the side covers to take off the gear etc.

finally got around to it
have to tap it slightly away from the gear side once you unscrew the two holding screws
too it apart and cleaned the commutator with alcohol and works like a charm
in 20/20 hindsight I should have used scotch brite on the commutator and the ends of the brushes
the brushes still had plenty left on them and everything else looks clean

Repair did not last long.
Had to get a new starter
