The trick is, pull the air filter out, then put your hand INSIDE the air box, then you can maneuver the rubber seals around the carbs and manipulate it much easier to fit around them.

Yep, I figured that out the first time I tried it. In fact I had to do this to get the airbox onto the carbs with them both on the bench.

But the problem I have is when the boots get seated onto the carbs, they wind up being pulled loose from the airbox. I'm going to try Buddha's recommendation to get them to expand a bit and then I'm going to RTV them in place. Among other mods to make this thing work.

The 89-00 carb mouth is oval. Later is round. I actually prefer the early air box boots. They tend to be of better quality.
