gs500 burning oil on decel

Hello everyone,

Got a slightly troubling issue with my 99 Gs500, it appears to be burning oil on engine braking. It only does it when decelerating, not on start up, revving or acceleration. What could cause this? The bike only has 13,XXX miles and is stock engine/drivetrain wise as far as I know (apart from a re-jet). The previous owner was pretty negligent with this bike, rode 1000 miles in ten years. I bought the bike non-running (needed a carb rebuild and a tune up). I do need to start tracking the oil consumption however. There have been two occasions where I have put 300-400 ml of oil in in 2000 miles.

Other than the oil, the bike runs great. I do ride her aggressively, lots of on ramp blasts, hard engine braking, etc. I noticed the oil consumption after a hard decel (6k to a stop) by smell.

Any ideas? Should I be concerned or just clean the plugs when fouled and track my oil consumption?

Maybe valve seals, does it smoke on startup at all?

Plugs look like they're getting hot. Might be running a bit lean?

Have you checked the engine over thoroughly for any oil leaks and tightened the header pipes up?

The engine in general will use some oil... and the harder the use/revving the more oil used also.... the fact that you smelled it after a hard decel is more likely you have a vapour trail of oil smell in the turbulence just behind you and the sudden stop let it waft up and around for you to smell. ....

If the bike is producing oil smell then its likely to be doing it all the time but the forward motion and then easier stops with less turbulence/vacuum drag behind you let's the smell dissipate more..

My thinking anyway. ..

Like if you stop hard or reverse slowly in a car you smell heaps of gasoliney exhaust. .. its always there but usually left far behind you.

Valve seals.......you are sucking oil past them!!

Common thing if you have riding habits like yours.  Close off from high revs and all that  vacuum in the inlet tract does the rest. Once in a while won't hurt but do it constantly and it can only end in tears

Change the seals if you want but if you keep thrashing it the problem will soon be back and will never go away  :dunno_black:

Overfilling the crankcase can make oil leave the engine out of the breather into the airbox, IE adding oil with the bike on the side stand (overfill). I mention this because it has happened and is a real possibility, and you are Toshing the question out there on the internet.

"I have put 300-400 ml of oil in in 2000 miles. "

everything i've read about GS500s suggest they like to make a little oil disappear anyways,  so 300-400 mls of oil in 2000 miles sounds pretty good to me if you're an aggressive rider.   that's roughly 1/3rd of a quart for what, 10 tank fill ups?  i'll take that all day long.

+1 to you, Sir :thumb:

Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil
3: Repeat
