explosive oil loss out of filter at power.

allright. just put the engine back in my bike, the reason it was out being a couple of sheared exhaust bolts. (an 04 gs500) had some issues getting the oil filter cover back on but I 'thought' it was on tight. i did not replace the seal with a new one as the previous one seemed in good condition. had difficulty aligning the cover but tapped it into place and put in a little over 2.5 litres of oil

started up the bike, kept losing revs and the choke had no effect, I was hoping it would warm out and smooth out on its own... right up until oil exploded out of the filter cover and splattered all over my garage door. i killed it. fast.

and am now confused frustrated and more then a little afraid of blowing my motor.

so my first question is was this just likely a poorly placed gasket\cover blowing under operating pressure? or something more significant

in theory id like to try replacing cover, gasket oil and filter and see if she will idle is this a bad idea?

EXPLOSIVE?

Two things.

One. I cant count. :whisper:

Three.. using the word "explosive" as a descriptor....scares the shizznit out of me  :o .
If pressure is building up in your engine enough to blow out a (PROPERLY INSTALLED) gasket, then I must ask, what were you doing to get the exhaust bolts out? Could you have bored into the cylinder? Follow my logic.. boring through at that point could severely damage the cylinder wall and rings.....at detonation exhaust shoots into crank case....weakest point blows out explosively once pressure inside engine reaches its "oh sh*t!!" point.

Twicely.... no... no more .... you said "Explosively".... you said "kept losing revs".......sounds like my # three comment.......only one cylinder is firing under full compression.....

and finally sixteen.... for what its worth.... I really hope I am wrong. :thumb:

WAIT....

I forgot # ten...... before you spend money on the oil and stuff....do a compression test.

forgot number 7 also.  :dunno_white:

#7 - I have a blown motor. I don't know the condition.  If its what I think it is and you wanna rebuild...Lemme know what you need and I'll see if the parts are any good... you can have them for shipping costs.

3imo2: Read the OP again.... he didn't blow oil out of his exhaust port, it cane from the oil filter cover.

Jagged: Most likely the rubber gasket in the filter cover popped out of its groove when you installed it. Get a new filter and the rubber gasket should be included. Line the groove in the cover with bearing grease, and press in the rubber - the grease does a pretty good job of holding it in place while you install the cover. And check the studs for the filter cover - if the threads are chewed up it might release the nuts under pressure.

Rich. . 3ino didn't say out of exhaust port... he said maybe bored thru there into bore/cylinder/ring area... on that cylinder 'firing' the pressure blows down past rings, into the case and out a weak point... in this case possibly the filter seal ring!? :icon_eek:

3ino2. .. you can stay! ... I appreciate your numerical ordering!  :thumb:

Thanks....
yeah. I meant at the oil filter seal.

I believe the lower exhaust bolt lines right up with where the piston hits TDC.....   I'm just saying worst case. From experience new symptoms are usually caused by the last thing I did to fix the last symptom.

as I said before....I really hope I am way wrong.

on a positive note... I think I have a good top end if he needs it.  no charge....just shipping.

No worries here fellas! Just a simple misunderstanding.

From the OP's description, it sounded like any oil came out of the filter cover - nothing from the top end.

No problem.

I think you're on to something though, if I'm right (and I hope not) he could pull those bolts out and see if any oil drips out.

I've got news....good for me.... :dunno_white:

The seized engine I have, isn't seized...the starter was shot..

I'm going to keep it and restore.

Sorry
