Cageron2wheels

Ok. I'm still new to the gs as well as riding in general but I have a broad spectrum of knowledge and I pick things up pretty quik so I'm pretty sure you guys can help me out, I've also read quite a few posts on here and they for the most part have answered my questions so far.

So here's the question. I would like to replace my existing headlight with two cree 54 watt led light bars. One at the bottom for low beam and both top and bottom for high beam. I already have the bracketry figured out as well as placement and shielding for the low beam so I don't blind the crap out of other drivers. I'm just curious about the wiring side of things?

Can I use the existing headlight wiring for two 54 watt led lights using the positive wire to both and the low/high wire to each light so I can use the existing switch on the handle bars? And will the existing wiring be able to handle both at once considering the total wattage?
Newbie so please be patient

And hopefully with your help a host of other things to come.

I hope you got an answer by now from someplace!  If not, try rewording your question, like "How much headlight wattage can I draw through my stock system." Or, something along those lines. I am building a little GS450 Cafe bike and after reading about unreliable voltage regulator problems (solved later?) I decided to upgrade as much of the system as possible. This involved a lot of easy remove and replace. All my lights, including the gauges are L.E.D. and I have one L.E.D headlight. Already it's bright enough to burn the paint off the back of the car in front of me if I were rude enough to leave it on high-beam!

You mean something like this?

No way that's going to be legal to run on the road, if that's what you're trying to do.  :dunno_black:  US regulations have a limit of something like 1512 lumens for your high beam and less for the low beam. The light I posted above is over 3x that. You will blind other drivers whether you like it or not.

But anyway, to help answer your electrical question I'd have to see exactly what lights you plan to run and then do the math on the current draw. LEDs are not necessarily "rated" at the actual wattage/current draw. Sometimes LED lights are rated with halogen-equivalent (or roughly) "wattage" but actually draw a lot less current. In the case of the one I quoted above, it appears to actually draw 55W so you would have to run one or the other for high beam/low beam, don't run them at the same time. It's a moot point anyway since in order to run them simultaneously low/hi beam you'd have to run relays and new power wiring.

You know there are a lot of DOT-compliant LED headlights out there that will be far brighter and provide better visibility than the stock headlight AND be easier to make them work on your GS500. Without blinding other drivers or risking a ticket.  :thumb:

If that is the real Cageron2wheels ( of youtube fame) , he is a Nederlander ( I think), so US reg won't apply. He have even more weird EU rules to live up to.
You could try using one LED to switch the other via a direct battery fed relay.
Good point though about the light pattern. Many ( most) LEDs don't have the proper cutoff for low beam. Phillips now made a proper led H4 "bulb" that emulates exactly the tungsten filament size and position and can be used with std reflectors.  They were an OK price when they came out but it has skyrocketed for some reason to ridiculous levels. I got mine before they inflated.
