Replacement mechanical speedometer for a '94 GS500

I have a '94 GS with the stock gauges that I'm looking to replace as they're a bit too bulky for my taste.

Does anyone have any experience with the cheap universal speedos found on eBay (this one for example)? I don't really use the tach so only a speedo is enough.

Thats an electric speedo my friend. I think there's about 0 chance you'll get that rig working on your gs without some major additions.

As for mechanical speedos in general you'll have to find the gauge ratio to make sure you get the right output from the after market speedo, i had a lot of trouble finding a- reasonably priced mechanical speedos, and b- actually finding the gauge ratio for the stock gs500.

My two cents, go for a decent digital gauge like a kovo or trailtech if you can put out the cash.

I'm sure, that it's just a typo in the description - it's 100% mechanical.

I decided to try my luck with this speedo as it has the neutral/turn/beam indicators as well.

I'm kind of unsure of your question Juuso..... the speedometer ratio in (almost) all metric bikes is 2240:60. I think some newer Triumph bikes, Harleys, Victory, etc have different ratios like 2:1 and 1:1.

I think he was referring to the second option the OP listed.  On the face of the gauge, there's that exact inscription.  Not sure what that means either.  Regardless, not sure how these would translate to the GS.  Guess you'll just have to take a chance and try one.  Track it with your GPS to see how well it correlates.

I have never heard of that ratio used on anything (doesn't mean it wasn't though). And it's very weird that it has "1400 rmp" on the face.....
