No longer need choke after re-jetting, is this right?

I just jetted 20/60/132.5, one o-ring on the needles, and mixture screw 2 turns out. I now have better throttle response, a more linear power band, and maybe even some more WOT power. It idles smooth and starts without choke in 45F weather, which is new. So, it's much richer than before. Im happy, but I'm curious: was the choke/enricher added by Suzuki to manage the lean factory setup? Would a properly jetted bike not need a choke?

In my opinion a properly jetted bike should need choke in order to start from stone cold. My opinion is yours is now way too rich. With all the carburetted cars I've had and other carby bikes, they've all needed the choke to start properly.

How long have you ridden it for - does it foul plugs / what do the plugs look like after you've taken it for a reasonable run?

Your floats are likely high.
Or air screws weren't seated fully before you turned em out 2 turns.

Or an air passage is blocked, that can make it richer just @ idle.

Cool.

my SV was rich down-low and never needed choke with the ridiculous jetting I had on it, Never flooded, and maintained a 40mpg just fine. nice thing was it started up without choke no problem.

you should need the choke to start. if not, the idle mixture is way rich for some reason. Buddha has the right answer.

...he usually does :)

I just realized my air filter is old. I'll drop a new one in tomorrow so it can breathe a bit easier, then I'll try again. I also learned that the head of the screwdriver bit Im using to turn the mixture screws is quite wide, so it was bumping into the threads. I filed it down. I'll give it another shot tomorrow morning.
