Hi everyone. I have run i to a dilemma with my 2011 GS500F. Whilst trying to fix an oil leak from cam chain tensioner, we inadvertently damaged the cam chain guide. So we decided to take it to local Suzuki mob to get a price on getting them to fix it. So my question is, what sort of ball park figure would I be looking at in terms of time required to pull engine apart, replace cam chain guide and reassemble engine? Thanks in advance for your input  :D

You mean if you were going to do it yourself?

Well, yes. And how long it should take a trained technician?

There are videos you can follow on youtube, I reckon 6 hours, including lunch, tea breaks and a beer at the end. The video shows the engine out of the bike, it's a little more fiddly in the frame and depending on your skill level and familiarity. I'd get your parts/tools in first and go from there.

I'd expect a trained mechanic to be done in half that.

it depends which guide you damaged, the front one just needs the tappet cover removed, the rear one (the one the tentioner pushes on) requires the casings to be split, now a tappet cover removal and reinstallation should take 1 to 2 hours.
splitting the casings ... well thats atleast a 8 if not 12 hour job
sure you can rush it and do it in 3/4 of that time, but you will make mistakes,
my advice is to pull the motor on a friday night, spend saturday rebuilding it and then pop tho motor back in on sunday,
dont rush and work clean
if you plan to fail do you still fail to plan?

Aaaaah yes, you mean the ones with the perfectly setup work area complete with lift and every tool in its exact spot that a blind man can find it and function ... LOL.

Here is a story. In 2004/5 when I was unemployed for months I set up a motorcycle repair business.

Someone with a ducati 748 showed up and asked me to do a valve adjustment. I told him I know nothing and have never done it before. He said just read this manual and be careful etc etc and let me do it.
It took me a whopping 4.5 hrs cos I also was being very very careful with the plastic. I told him I will hit him with the full freight of $40 a hr, so he's looking @ 180.
The guy bursts into tears. I think oh crap, I'm ripping him off. He hands me 2 benjamins. And literally hugs me. He says, he'd never spent less than a grand for that and a oil change and a general electrical (fuse and lights and brakes check) on the thing @ the duc dealer.
I say, OK for an additional 800 I can do that if you prefer, or I can show you how in about 30 sec for free.
Needless to say, my garage is no where near as organized as the "mechanics work space is.
Cool.
