Hello all! First post so let me know if I'm doing something stupid. Anyways today I thought I would get my 91 GS500 out to enjoy the nice weather. After charging the dead battery up, I turned the ignition to "on" and hit the start button. Nothing. The lights and all came on but the start button had no effect. After fiddling with it for quite a while it was back to normal. After taking a few errands and having the bike start up like usual, I decided to get some gas. I put the key back in after using it to open my gas tank, and once again it would not start. I had to jump the solenoid to get it going. What could it possibly be? My bet is on the ignition switch but I would just like to see if anyone has any other opinions. Thanks!

check the wiring/plug under the clutch lever.. sometimes when those get loose, this happens. if not that, check the plugs at the kickstand. [but kickstand shouldn't effect the bike if its in neutral.

If that wiring is for a safety switch, it's been removed by PO. Also what do the fuel lines and air box connect to?? I've tried a few different answers for this but it won't accept them

I believe the wiring I have left on the left handlebar is for the turn signal and high beam switch. Anything else it could possibly be? I'd hate for it to be the ignition switch because it seems like it would be difficult to replace. What is the likelihood that it would be the actual start button?

On the left side of the handle bar, the clutch switch,



check this, if the PO deleted it, trace the wires where his "delete" happened, I'm almost betting if the PO "deleted" this, that's where your problem lies, not something else.

old bikes build up surface corrosion over the years. So you need to hit the switches a bunch of times after a winter to get them to start working again. I get a few bikes every year for super cheap because of poor contacts on neutral safety switches and clutch starter switches and starter switches. Just jerk the clutch switch and hit the kill switch button hard a bunch. itll start working again.

worst case scenario open the housings up and clean the contacts.

It's been fixed! My custom wiring work was was all binding up and there was a short or something. After organizing my wires somewhat, the issue resolved itself.
