Got a 2007 GS 500 f , when I bought it and had been sitting for a couple years and just turned 4,000 MI that was one year ago it did not seem to run right and the gas smells like varnish, I am a commercial Golf Course equipment mechanic so I know a lot about carburetors and electrical devices attached to carburetors I took the carbs off all the the intake boots and air cleaner boots that hook up to the back of the car we're all in solid shape no leaks at all. After removing the carbs pulling the Jets and cleaning up with gumout and 150 lbsi air compressor and cleaning all the small holes with wire I put it back together the choke seem very sensitive but it starts up right away idles great after about 1 minute in 65 degree weather not bad but after I drive it for 25 miles or so a lot of times more than that when I come to a light and have to stop and pull the clutch in and put it in neutral the RPM is up at 3500 it's not an issue of getting hot because sometimes when I come to a light it idles at a perfect 1500 but sometimes I come up to light and stop it idils t 3500 the thing that perplexes me is that when it's idling high which happens about 50% of the time when I'm riding it and I stopped at a light and it's shifted down into first gear if I let the clutch out and the idle drops from the hanging 3500 down to about 2,000 because of the loan I'm putting on it if I pull in the clutch then it idles fine

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. One of the slides could be getting stuck high for some reason, or it could be a sticking float needle, sticking open causing too much fuel in the float bowl and you change the throttle condition and it unsticks. Also worth checking sticky throttle cable, choke cable, etc.

BTW my bike did exactly as you describe with the original carbs. Never could sort it out. Basically it wouldn't idle. The problem was most likely due to the fact that the vacuum ports on the carb tops (for syncing the carbs) were broken off and the holes had been improperly filled. But even after JB-welding them it still didn't run right. I suspected the diaphragms were hosed, at least one, plus it needed a complete new set of o-rings in the carbs so I gave up and swapped carbs. I put all new o-rings in the "new" carbs and replaced the intake boot o-rings and it ran like a champ after that, until the next (non-carb) problem surfaced.

Tight valves can contribute to this problem--at least on my own GS500f.
