What you mean "another shim" - If there was 1 already, you can get a thicker one. They sell them in 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 mm thicknesses if I recall. Copper washer sounds an awful lot like its gonna break itself out of there.
Bent cam shaft will do a whole lot worse than just knock, and you can have it checked for run-out.

And you have 2 heads that had this knock ? I'll venture a guess the new motor will too. I'm thinking the heads were all fine. You're just not used to the scratching and rattling and banging noises this motor makes anyway. And those old school GS and GSXR's were all worse. You probably just need to hear it and get used to it.

Cool.

Thanks Bhudda,

I realise the Copper shim was a short term fix to eliminate the cam end float.  The knock is much more than just a noisy top end and you would never get used to it.  Honest I'm not a complete beginner at working on engines and had a friend who has worked on and sold bikes for many years listen to it and he confirmed something is very wrong with the engine.  As you say two heads and a similar if not identical noise maybe now points to something else other than the head.
