Carb jet question

Hey guys. So I have a 2007 GS500f and finally got her running somewhat decent. The only problem I'm really having is thay it takes forever to warm up and occasinally dies while coming to a stop. I have been looking around at how to do a rejet. My question is, can I just put a size 20 pilot jet in and leave the others stock? From my understanding the 2007 has a 17.5 pilot and the pilot jet is the one that controls idle.

Thanks in advance, Matt

head over to this recent post, it may give you an idea of what could be wrong.

Find out if it's running lean at idle (probably).

It will still take forever to warm up. It takes 10-15 minutes of riding before a GS500 is fully warmed up. You can't change that with jetting.

But if it's running lean at idle then it will take a long time before you can take it off of choke without it stalling.

The specific answer is yes, put a 20 pilot jet in and then adjust the idle mixture. But this won't make it "warm up" any quicker, it'll just mean it requires choke for less of the warm up time, and will enable you to get it adjusted to not run lean at idle when it is fully warmed up.

BTW, a reminder, always and only make adjustments to mixture and idle speed with the bike FULLY warmed up. You're not adjusting for cold-condition running (you can't). You are adjusting for warmed-up conditions. The choke is there to aid in cold start and cold running.

Imagine Suzuki taking a good thing then going one step lean to make the EPA happy  :dunno_black:

This is what I did with mine, #20 Pilots and #132.5 Mains, throttle response, cold starting where improved, always felt it should have come out of the box this way.

EDIT: To an absolute bone stock 2007

Mr72 is correct, warm up time wont decrease, it may actually increase. However the time to hold a steady idle and run without choke may drop to a third of what it is now.
Cool.

I think what i really need to do is check valve clearance. The bike dies a lot when I come to a stop at lights.

I'm also interested in putting #20 pilots in my 2007. I've found some on eBay that should work:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Mikuni-OEM-TMX-BSR-Size-20-Pilot-Jet-N224-103-20/171421886756?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
A wiki contributor to the jetting chart suggests adding a washer?   I haven't come across a definitive guide with pictures to do this.

i put the 20 pilot in my 04f and it worked well. still have to start it with enrichener and let it run for a bit till it warms up. there are no washers on the pilot or any other jets.
if a man has integrity, nothing else matters. if a man dosen't have integrity, nothing else matters.

The washers might go on the slide needles? One of my jets had an o-ring, so I just replaced it the last time I cleaned. My warmup is about 5 minutes but quicker if cruise for a couple of minutes and don't have to coax it from a dead stop.

I know your intentions are great.

but I wouldn't buy from jets R scams.

Glad to finally see the site owner have finally at least put "SLOW/PILOT JETS price per each jet" because when I used them originally like 4 years ago, the wording wasn't correct and I assumed since he was naming off particular bikes and what would "Fit" instead of just carburetor models or saying they where per jet.

you would be surprised too after 7 days of waiting expecting your new awesome jets to come in, and only receiving one of each, for 4 carbs. then after contacting the jerkoff he gives you attitude telling you to "READ THE WEBSITE" when you READ the website from where you clicked on the jets you wanted, to the checkout page, nowhere did it say "priced per jet" Maybe someone finally threatened to sue?

I'm still confused how 1 jet cost $7.29

When

FOUR JETS OF THE SAME SIZE from bikebandit cost $12.95 giving you $3.24/jet at BB.

that's $4.05/jet EXTRA he's charging for ONE jet. ON TOP OF he still charges for shipping anyway..

I'm not mad I didn't do it first. I'm mad I got ripped off years ago. /blogpost/

@ Mattb115 - I am not a mechanic and was very forgiving of my bike when I picked it up a couple of years ago. When I initially took it to get inspected the mechanic quoted over $1000 to get it running okay, to start.
That being said, I've put about 2,000 miles on the bike and plowed through the same symptoms as you. Don't give up, only god and the PO's know what that bike has been through.  I also haven't checked valve clearances, too big of a job without a garage for me to work in.

I was able to answer my own question about lifting the needle by doing a search for "needle shim".  The most helpful link so far was  Topic: $0.60 Horsepower...Finally put some washers on the needle http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=43835.0
You'll have to locate the original poster's photobucket directory to view a pictures they posted.

Jets washers bolts etc etc for your individual setup I have been selling and of late I've actually been getting them out in a matter of days (instead of weeks a few months ago) for $25 shipped in the US.

Cool.
