oil leak

Hi there,

Noticed my GS500F was suddenly idling low the other day, and then noticed oil leaking down from a tube just behind the crank case on the right side, onto the exhaust where it was smoking. Pulled over and checked the oil and there was barely anything left, however the leak can't have been there more than a day. The tube has a small cut in it that shouldn't be there, if i just seal it up with something temporary to ride home with? I'll have to bus back with some oil.

Hiya peskymilk,

That tube is your airbox drain hose. That cap is there to prevent too much air from going into the air box and the slit is there to let anything foreign drain out when necessary. Don't seal it up!

I am not sure where to go from here... if this had happened to my bike, I'd jump here on the forum and search... oil shouldn't be getting into your airbox like that.

I have learned over the years to always check oil level in the GS... never just assume there is enough!

Any other oil leaks on the outside of the engine you've noticed at all?

so in my rush to get to uni the other day i mistook the leak for oil - it is in fact petrol, which has me slightly less worried considering that's the airbox drain hose. This thread seems to explain my problem nicely - http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=13243.0, especially the 5th reply from jawntybull. I ran out of fuel the other day and I assume some grime/dirt came out when the tank emptied and is now stuck in the vacuum valve (which I'm assuming is the valve on the left side where you switch between res and main). Hopefully that's all it is. Should I try cleaning the vacuum valve?

Even if the petcock is not shutting off, the carbs should not overflow. Check the float needles and seats as well as the float level. It is, of course, good to get the petcock working properly.
