Disconnecting cables for lube-job

Apologies for the questionable wording in the title...maybe it's just my mind that's in the gutter.

Anyway, I wanted to lube my clutch and throttle cables this weekend while the bike is still in hibernation for winter. It took me about ten minutes to realize that i have *NO* idea how to disconnect the lever-ends of the cables.

A quick search on this site brought me to Kerry's very helpful tutorial on disconnecting the clutch cable: http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4306&highlight=cable+lube (thanks Kerry!), but that still leaves me clueless on how to get a free end on both of the throttle cables. I unscrewed the right hand switch gear to get a better look on the housing, and i was kind of hesitant to just pry the cable ends out of the plastic throttle housing in fear of cracking it.

Any ideas?

Ah yes, my botched "How To".     Make sure you read my second post in that thread for the REAL way to free the lever end of the clutch cable.

As for the throttle - I've only messed around with the lower end of that cable.  But I do know that there is only one cable (not two).  The throttle is returned by a spring at the carburetor end rather than by a second cable.

To get some slack in the throttle cable without taking off the fuel tank, etc. you might try screwing the idle adjust knob in as far as it will go.  There is also an "adjustment coupler thingie" on the upper end of the throttle cable which may or may not help.  You can see the adjuster (between my hand and the brake lever) in this picture.

If/when you get that throttle cable out, post the REAL details for future reference.  K?

There seems to be some discrepancies regarding the throttle cable(s). Just to clarify, I have a 2002 model GS, and while my Clymer manual says that "all models use a single throttle cable", the owners manual that came with the bike specifically states that "this motorcycle uses a twin throttle cable system". I verified this myself by opening up the switch gear assembly and seeing the two cables. This might be for model years 2000+ (maybe even 02 only?).

Regardless, thank you for the suggestion Kerry. I'll see what others might recommend, but i'll definitely post some details/pics once i get those flippin cables out to hopefully prevent any future confusion.

Well waddayano!  Slowly but surely I'm finding out more about the '01+ models.  I've never even seen one, so I should probably keep my mouth shut until I do.

'Course, if I keep my mouth shut I may never learn this cool info!
