cam end float shim

Hi,

Will any steel shim do or it needs to be some special spec one? got noticeable ticking when riding under load so pulled the valve cover  off and tried to move the ex. cam side ways. has about 0.12 mm movement.  it has been shimmed already so needs just an extra one.  did the valve clearances as well and all were in spec.

First of all, I don't think the cam side-play is the cause of your ticking.

A noise from cam side-play is probably normal, depending on year. It would be more of a slow rhythmic clunking from the top end at idle, like clunks every 2 seconds, with a ker--clunk... ker--clunk... kind of sound, clearly coming from the cylinder head (mine does it, so I know this sound well).

Anyway, you may be talking about the wavy washer ("shim") described in that thread? If so, maybe you can change it? But likely not worth it, because it's probably unrelated to your ticking noise.

A ticking that increases under load could be a number of other things. I wouldn't know, my engine makes all kinds of crazy noises under load. But my first guess would be an exhaust leak, most likely at the head-to-header junction. If valve clearances are in spec then this makes the most sense. A crack in the head can cause the same symptom (in engines in general) but I have yet to hear of a GS500 doing it.

From my old poring of the zook catalog - they make these in different thicknesses. Look for a thicker one than your current one.

Going to take the head off soon to lap the  valves and change the seals, will measure the shim. Hopefully can go a size upwards.

All of this has nothing to do with cam shaft end float shim.
It will float and clack long after you've miced the heck out of everything and blue printed your head.

That's what I suspected, which is why I initially pointed out that a "ticking" that increases with load (and presumably with rpm) is not a symptom of camshaft side play.

But to Buddha's point, even if you did have the cam side play noise (I like his term, "clack"), you may not fix it with a different shim.

9/10 the "ticking" is exhaust leak. 1/10 chance it's something way, way worse, which you will discover when you get the head off

the funny thing with this "ticking" is that i can hear it real well helmet on visor closed. As soon i open the visor the "ticking" kind of a disappears

Sorry - that was the line I was responding to earlier.
Your cam shaft side play shim is on top of the head, just under the valve cover, on one side only.
You take it off and lap the valves and measure a shim - you're conducting a rectal exam for someone who's got a runny nose.

Take off the valve cover and check for cam shaft side play. Only valve cover, not take the motor apart from the oil drain plug. Its a 10 minute job and most of that 10 mins in my case is spent searching for the tool.

Exhaust gaskets are in front of the head, and can be changed by taking off the exhaust only - no need to take the head off and lap anything again.

You're ticking problem is one of those 2 and worth checking. Before you decide your transmission needs new bearings cos your front wheel got a flat tar.
