You know the air inlet tube that hangs over and behind the airbox, well I blew some air down that to see what would happen and as you can see from the short video, petrol came back out through the holes and also leaked out of that pipe that connects the two carbs.

Would this be expected behaviour? I'm still trying to diagnose some sort of suspected carburettor problem.

That is notmal, and for the same reason if you plug that thing you will get no fuel going into the motor either.
You likely have fuel in the motor now, make sure you crank it a few times with spark plugs out or you'd hydro lock it and bend a rod.
And don't go blowing in holes again you crazy aussie ...
Yea yea they went, the forum was down so I forgot to tell ya.
Cool.

Oh, OK.

What does that lower pipe do. I assumed it was just a structural member, but it appears to be something more.

By what route would petrol get into the engine this way?. btw I just did this for a second.

The lower rear T is fuel inlet to float chamber via needle. Upper rear T is vent to float bowl.
Since the float was open your fuel went out the lower rear T - the fuel inlet.
If your float was closed (as in your had more fuel in the bowl - it will have flowed out the main and pilot jets down the intake manifold and into the chamber. And to the mouth into the air filter.
Just get the plugs out and crank it a few sec and you're clear.
