Strange noise

I went out for a 100 mile ride today... Not the easiest to do here... there's only so much road on Long Island and I didn't go out on the forks  Man, it got really cold!  Must remember to wear more layers on longer rides!  Plenty of bikers out, lots of waves... Even got to talk to a cool H-D rider at a long stop light

And now for the problem.  Redid both front and back suspension, works well but a little choppy over uneven surfaces... helps in the turns though.  Put in Bob's ignition advancer and now I have a smooth powerband But, now when I hit 5500 rpm, it sounds like a chainsaw.... BWAAAAA!  Really loud and sudden.  I'm thinking it's some sort of vibrating part, but I didn't tinker with the engine lately.  It's not speed related... the sound goes from sewing machine to full on monster.  Tomorrow I'll check for loose fittings, but it really boggles me... All that sound that wasn't there before!  Does anyone have an idea about it?

I've read on this forum that the fuel tank can begin to resonate around 5-6K.  Since it lays flat on the frame and is only bolted securely in the rear and hooks on the frame in front, it's a definite possibility.  A length of foam weatherstrip or a couple of layers of duct tape along where the tank sits on the frame would be where I would start.

If you have the proper stock rubber peices under the tank, it shouldn't make contact with the frame.

or you can get that rubber strip that people put under a pickup topper. works pretty good too

I found the source of the noise.  I thought I had the front fender bolted in well enough after doing the front forks, but I guess not... time to take the front wheel off again and tighten things down *sigh*  And I was listening for things coming from the business part of the bike.  It wouldn't vibrate while on the sidestand, so I ended up trying to touch the fender with my foot while revving the engine.  Bah, and I thought it was going to be an interesting problem!

Awww, I forgot to tighten those 4 bolts when I worked on my forks too.  I had to take the tire back off to tighten.

yeah, but now one of those little bastards is sorta stripped and I thought I did as much tightening as I needed... oh well teflon tape around the allen key and some luck for now.
