tank overflow vent leaking

Hi all, I recently picked up a 02 gs500. As it was sitting around for a year, I took apart the carbs and cleaned them. I also cleaned out the tank as well. I managed to have everything reassembled and with about 1.5 l of fuel, it was happy and running. This morning I took the bike to the gas station and filled 10 l of fuel and that's when I noticed my tank overflow/vent line was leaking fuel. the only way I got home was to pinch/prop the line between my seat and my tank, keeping it vertical. When I blow a bit of compressed air into the tank vent hole (under the tank lid) the hose spurted out a bit of fuel.

What has happened? My worst fear is that the vent tube inside my tank has broken and that is why I'm leaking.

The vent tube actually is only from the filler mouth area. You may have overfilled it a lot.

I wish that was the case. According to specs the tank is supposed to hold approximately 20l of fuel. I only put in 10.

From absolutely bare empty? The reserve is sizeable and you've got even less usable volume if it's on the kickstand rather than the centre stand.

Are you 100% it's the tank overflow line rather than the airbox drain? And are you 100% that it's fuel leaking out? I've seen rain leak out of there before.

Are you sure it's the tank vent, the problem I have is it's flooding the carbs and coming out of the air box drain. But when I try them off the bike it comes out of the carb air vent

Ya this line that is leaking is the one attached to the overflow vent. The tank was just cleaned, so it was bone dry when I put my first 1.5 l in. If I were to block the overflow once and for all, will this cause me issues?
I was thinking of blocking it off and getting a vented gas cap.

CA spec tanks have 2 of these, one from the filler cap and the other one ~3" to the right of that as you're sitting on the bike. That's called a rollover I think.
If the tank was very rusty, you may have had a pinhole in the line that goes through the tank. I've dealt with many many very very crappie tanks, but never one that did that. You didn't super aggressively put like a bunch of rocks in it and shake the hell out of it did you ?
Anyway if it is a pinhole a coat job may take care of it.

This is a Canadian Bike and doesnt have an second tank. the tank wasnt rusty, but gunky after sitting for a year. I used apple cider vinegar as well about a dozen bb's and wasnt too aggressive with shaking the tank. i will try to put a scope down the tank when then weather gets a bit better to see if there is a crack in the vent tube.

2 vents of those metal tubes not 2 tanks.

My tank has 3 nipples in total: two very close to each other, attached to the fuel filter- these should be Main and Reserve fuel lines, 1 a few inches away, and it is connected to the tube thats is inside the tank and exits under the filler cap

This is similar to what i have

The Buddha

Good, yea that's just 1 tube to look through for a crack. CA crap has an extra one ending in a "rollover valve" near the top of the tank,
Cool.

Looking at the vent pipe this weekend, I realized that there was a small break somewhere above the 2l mark of the tank. I am now waiting for a new (used) tank to come my way.

Thanks for the help!

That'll do it. You could try coating it with POR15 gas tank liner or something.
Cool.
