Hey guys,

I know this will likely not be answered until I dig into it this weekend. BUT, I have a slight oil leak from what looks like either the oil cooler nut on the left (when looking at the bike head on) or from the Oil filter cover plate (presumably the o ring is bad). I will be doing an oil change tomorrow or Saturday with hopes that this will stop the leak. I am wondering if A. There is a rubber o ring on the Oil cooler, that I should look into replace while I am down there doing work. and B. If there are any other places I should be looking when I start the process.

I can fully document the change, I haven't been riding much lately because I have been worried about this leak. So I am hoping to eliminate this by the end of the weekend, and feedback would be great! Appreciate you reading and any information you can provide.

Cheers,

Scradley

Oil filters will often come with a fresh o-ring.  I'm not sure about the oil cooler line as I don't have that on mine.  I'm sure someone has that answer for you or you can check the Wiki.

I'd suggest you wipe all the goo off and go for a ride to see if you can determine the source of the leak before you go chasing phantoms.

One good trick is to clean that area really well, and then dust it with baby powder or talcum powder.  This will show up any new leaks clearly.

On my bike, the oil filter O-ring was old and baked solid, leading to the leak.
Careful with those nuts on the oil filter cover.  Most of us have managed to break the studs under them, so be really gentle tightening them down.

Here's an update lads, Saturday rolls around and I am getting ready to go out to the garage for an oil change - a couple minutes down the road. Fire up the GS head inside to grab my gear. Come out, and there's smoke everywhere. So naturally I panic, turn the bike off SnapChat my buddy the pictures with a caption of "Well, I'd say she's f%&ked". So he suggests to add a bit of oil and head on over. So that's exactly what I do, I get there we and we investigate. To my surprise, the head stud has sheared off, I'm not sure why I am surprised but I am. We fashion a new one change the oil, I go back the next day to pick it up, not a lick of oil anywhere. Problem solved. Now it's time to look into next summer, I am looking forward to acquiring accessories and turning the bike into a camping machine.

Cheers,

Scradley
