hello gstwinners,

i have bought myself a GS500 and it works like it should.
the only problem i had was that te rpm gauge was not well attached, so i wanted to fix that problem.
but after completely removing it and installing it again, my rpm gauge started to act wierd.
when i rev the engine the needle goes up way to little, and way to slow.
en when i let go of the throttle the needle returns verry slowely.
can any of you tell me how to fix this?

To confirm, the engine is working fine and it's just the needle on the tachometer that's delayed?

sbusscher

Yes, the engine is running fine.
I wil see if i'm able to make a video tommorow

Nice looking bike. What year is it?

It's probably the cable that isn't fully engaged in the drive recess in the tacho head.
And / or look for wear - rounding off of the cable inner and the corresponding drive recess.
You can test the tacho off the bike using an electric drill to drive it (off the bike of course).

The bike is from 1992

I'm gonna check the cable this evening, but it seems fine.
I allready tried the trick with the cordless drill amd it seems to be working, the needle only returns slowly.
I think the cable is fat enough in.
I think i order a new cable and just try to replace it.
I hope my tacho is fine because they are a bit more expensive

this evening i checked my cable and it seems okay.

also i made a video to show you how my tacho behaves on the bike:

and i tried my tacho with the cable and a cordless screwdriver:

and my cable and my tacho seems to work when it's not on the bike.

does anyone know what could be the problem?

i'm also considering an digital tacho, does anyone know to wich wire i should connect the rpm sensor?

tobyd

I had a very slow moving tacho that didn't really register lower than 1500rpm and moved very lethargically.

I couldn't work out the mechanism or what was sticking so replaced with an ebay unit. They are pretty easy to swap, just the two acorn nuts (8mm) + cable nut (hand-tight) on the back of the cluster. Slide out the tach housing a little then free off the light bulb holder and swap another unit in. Be careful with the rubber gasket between the tacho housing and the silver bit-with-lights (dash?) as they can get a bit crusty.

I don't think a '92 has a digital sensor - its mechanically driven from the cable into the cylinder head so you'd have to get a bit more involved.

Double check the cable route... there is likely to have a kinked curve in the path... reroute the cable and try to found the smoother path as possible.

(wow... nice bike ,, congrats)

Good luck!
