Hi all, I have a ticking noise that sounds like it's coming from the exhaust valves. (Video: https://youtu.be/bsTTfOiKBE8) Is this a normal sound for these bikes? I have checked the valves and the exhaust valves were at 0.1 mm (which is fine according to BaltimoreGS), and the intake valves were within spec. It kinda sounds normal but it's so hard to tell with these engines

It's ticking noise, maybe from valves.
I would check again valve clearance and correct within the specs of suzuki, and then see I the noise is excisting or no....
Second thing I have in mind is the cam chain...

This bike makes a ton of valve train noise.
Valves set to spec, clack pretty loudly, the cam end float is another noise maker from the top end. Both of those are not worrisome if in spec. Cam end float is like unavoidable with even 3/10th of an mm, the thinnest shim they make for that is 1mm. I think on 01+ models they came with shim already in there, on 89-00 they did not unless it was very very rare and I have never seen one. These noises are OK and normal. There are others that are bad and get worse.

Can chain - Check that open length of cam chain between the sprockets when turning the motor over by hand. It should never sag between the sprockets. If it does - your cam chain tensioner is bad and you have to change that immediately, else you could jump time.

Past that - bottom end - make sure its from the top of the motor and it should be one of those 3. But bottom end bearings when they go, they make a clicking noise and usually don't last much from the time you hear it, till its dead. 20-30 miles maybe.

Cool.

The cams don't seem to have any play, and the chain looks like it has good tension. I guess it may just be a GS500 being a GS500  :dunno_black:
