Throttle lagging and engine dying while idling.

Hey Guys, just after some advice on where to start troubleshooting my issue.
I've got a k4 model that i recently decided to give some love to over the Easter weekend. I changed the oil filter and oil, then replaced the air filter while the oil was draining.
However I didn't notice when i was lifting the tank around i split the fuel hose at the tank petcock (sometime after switching off the fuel). After i finished changing the oil, and bolted everything back on, i realized i forgot to turn the fuel back on, and when i did it started pouring onto the floor for a short period.
I then made a trip to repco and picked up some 5/16 fuel hose, and replaced the main and reserve fuel lines.

I then started her up and she was seeming to run fine with the choke, but i did notice a bit of lag with the throttle and the occasion weak pop from the exhaust, nothing like a backfire.
I didn't think to much of it at the time as it was getting dark.
I started her up today to go to work, and felt a very touchy throttle while riding, sometimes it would feel as though there was no power increase as i moved up through the gears, and then all of a sudden it would kick in.
Also when stopping at lights the idle revs would slowly drop until it would die(even in neutral), or if i applied to much throttle from a slow speed again the engine would cut out.
When i got to work i tried adjusting my idle time to bring it back up to the normal range, which only increased the amount of time before it would die. However riding it again presented the same problems as before.
it also seems like there is a smell of fuel while its running, but i spent 5 minutes looking for leaks while it was running with the choke and i couldn't see anything.

Prior to all this the choke had been acting a bit funny in that it wasn't coming up to the 3-4k revs without some encouragement, but apart from that it was running fine and not different to when i first got it.

If you need any other info please let me know. I imagine the problem lies somewhere within the carbs, but honestly I'm not sure. so any help with troubleshooting the cause would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the new air filter is not a restricted one?

Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil
3: Repeat

The air filter was given to me from the previous owner still packaged in the box and it had the same factory part number as the one i pulled out.

Should i try sticking the old one back in and see if that changes anything?

I sonder if somer dirt has not been displdged from the tank/hose  and is blocking somerthing.

Check you get good flow from the carb drains (and that the fuel level is OK, check out the clear hose method).

Check the throat diameter of the two filters. If the same it should not be that. but you never know.  Is it a suzuki filter?

yeah the filter was identicle except it was clean, luckily i dont have to ride the bike again this week so after i get home ill put it on the centre stand and start having a look around.
