New tachometer cable too long?

Today I received some new genuine parts to replace my tachometer drive assembly on a 2000 GS500EY. Which included the drive gear, sleeve, seals and a new cable. Everything fits as it should apart from the cable.

The problem is that the inner cable seems to be too long for the sleeve. It fits in the engine side perfectly fine but when I try to attach it to the tachometer, the cable will go in but I cannot get the nut and flange attached to the threads on the tachometer as the sleeve doesn't reach.

It goes in enough to engage as the tacho works when I run the bike without the nut attached. But is there some specific method to get the cable in properly before I start cutting it down to fit?

Can delete this thread to prevent clutter if you want. Managed to get it on (With a lot of difficulty and swearing)
