Broken Magnet and Ticking Sound from Generator Side

Hi all, thanks for answers in advance.

I recently had a charging problem on my 1998 GS500 and therefore opened up the generator cover to discover 1 one of the 6 magnets had broken. I removed all the visible magnet pieces and also replaced the stator as some of the wires had been cut. After this, the bike was charging well and running with no problem.

I noticed a small ticking sound coming from the generator side of the engine, and opened the case again, but couldn't find the source of the ticking. The rotor seems to rotate freely around the stator. The ticking sound increases in speed with higher revs.

What could be the source of this ticking be? (Won't be able to supply any sound as the bike is packed away for winter storage)
Could it be that that the rotor is hitting something because of the instability caused by the asymmetrical weight distribution on the rotor?
In that case, is it recommended to remove the opposing magnet as well?

Thanks!

You'd have a bunch of debris everywhere if the issue was rotor hitting stuff.
You may have some upper end noise you're mistaking for lower end, in which case it could be cam shaft end float. Or even correct valve clearances may be noisy.
Cool.

Did you check with a stethoscope or screw driver against your ear to conclude the current noise is comming from the left cover ?. What buddha says makes sense.. sometimes our mind plays tricks particularly because you just solved a problem in that area and now you hear a noise..  Ive just pulled apart everything under that side cover on my gs junker so its fresh in my mind and i cant think of what might make a noise getting faster with rpms as you described.  Maybe get a stethoscope and confirm its from there next time you start it.. fingers crossed you find its from the top and its just a happy tappy valve..  :tongue2:

Actually u said it gets faster with "speed" not just rpms?. Is it present when in nutural . When removing that left case you also remove the sprocket cover.. theres an earth wire held to one of the bolts there and the magnet wires go through there and are held by a little bendy clip thing..  if noise is not present when out of gear could the bendy bracket maybe be bent in such a way that its so slightly touching against the chain as it travels around the sprocket ? Or something similar ?? On the other hand if it is present in nutural disregard that and go to stetho test.. :icon_question:
