Well, if the .1% is true, I'll bet most of those are in non 0 drain tanks with massive crap pockets like the GS tanks. In fact I am yet to see a tank that's as bad as a GS in both those aspects. Even katana tanks are better, IMHO the second worst.

The new FI tanks or tanks with fuel level sensors have an inherent advantage, they have that huge hole for the fuel pump or the fuel level sensor.

Buddha, I like my GS500 and the deal I got on it and the ultra-low full coverage insurance cost of $77/year.  But, though Suzuki could not help using carbs before motorcycle EFI was perfected, they could easily have done better with making corrosion resistant tanks.  I really despise companies saving themselves a few dollars of production cost that later imposes $1000 extra maintenance cost on the owner (which is about the value of the time and/or money for 2 carb cleanings and a professionally lined tank).   So, if I was looking today knowing about these problems, I'd probably be willing to spend twice as much on a 2-4 year old CB500X and its $400/year insurance cost to save the time and trouble this older technology design imposes.

CB500X is 400 a yr ? Why ? I thought at worst its a few $$$ more.
My 2017 SCR950 and my GS500 almost the same $$ for about the same coverage. But When I had full coverage it cost maybe 2X as much.

Different companies may have different policies, but my motorcycle insurance is with Progressive, and here is how it is with them:
1.  $77 is the minimum price for which they will write a policy.  For a 2001 GS500 ridden by an older guy with no accidents or tickets, that covers liability, collision and comprehensive.  Of course, the bike is officially not worth very much, so if it were totaled or stolen, I would probably get a modest payback like $1000.
2.  For a 2016 CB500X I can get only liability for the same $77, and full coverage was $416.  It might be I could get something in between $77 and $416 like just liability and comp, but I did not think to ask that.  What they told me when I asked about the large difference is that it is a more expensive bike for them to have to cover, and it is a much more desirable theft target.
3.  My notes from that also call say that newer standard twin cylinder bikes up to 650cc are still $77/year for liability, but again higher for full coverage.  They quoted $197 for a 2008 SV650 and $430 for a 2016 Kawasaki Versys 650.

Though the GS500 deal is amazing, those are all actually good prices.  I've had young guys on 4 cylinder sport bikes with a few recent tickets tell me they were paying over $2500/year.

One young engineer who used to report to me told a funny story along these lines.  He had a 600cc Honda sport bike that he liked to open up.  So, one day he is tooling along the highway at about 140mph in a 55 zone (California), looks over his shoulder, and there is a motorcycle cop in formation with him.  Well, he went to jail for the night, the bike went to the impound and it cost $2000 to pay the ticket and fees to get it back out, and his insurance was canceled.  He still has the bike--next time we talk I'll ask him what he is paying for insurance with that on his record.
