You can put a digital spedometer on for about $16 (see http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5029&highlight=cyclocomputer)... but it has no light, so you can only see it during the day.  Anyways, it might get you by for a while.

You might ask some of the track racers here to buy their old ones (KevinC?).  Racers remove the guages (or tape them over), so there are probably a few unused ones floating around.

Yes that is correct, by for the least expensive way is one of the digital cycle "computers". REMA 1000 is right about the light, but when I was looking around recently at these simply because they are generally more accurate I noticed a couple available in UK with a battery light gismo that came as a fairly cheap extra. I think they were to be found in "Halfords" Auto-shops and the "Argos" catalogue. If they are available here I would be very surprised if you could not find one in the states.
The only slight downside to these is that they tend to be "quick-release" so when leaving your bike you have to remember to pocket it before someone else does and they to refit when returning to bike.

Check out ebay or your local cycle salvage and go with the stock oem type.

If you go the route of the bicycle computer you will have the issues listed above as to not being able to see it at night and then there is the legal issue when it comes time to sell the bike as far as the mileage on the bike when you sign over the titl eo the next owner.

I have gone the route of the bicycle computer on two of my last three motorcycle and when I sold one of them I noted that the mileage of the bike was not known which in turn could hurt resale value but in my case the buye did not care since he was just going to yue the bike for track days.

Check you local laws before removing or tampering with the stock speedometer.
