I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have an 09 gs500 that I just purchased from a guy. The bike will start up and run for a min or so then shut right back off. It will also shut off as soon as you put the bike in gear. The guy I had got it from took the stock air box off and put on 2 k&n filters in replace of those. So I'm assuming the bike isn't getting the proper air to fuel mixture. Would anyone be able to give me their suggestions on how to fix the issue. I did also get an extra set of carbs with the bike the guy has given me. Thanks in advanced for any advice. I'm not very good with carbs.

Welcome!

Did the previous owner give you any additional info/parts, for example:
- Did owner indicate the last time they had it in proper running condition?
- Did owner also provide you the stock airbox?
- Did owner explain why they also gave you an extra set of carbs?

I would think the first step would be to ascertain the condition of the carbs on the bike, and if they are even the proper carbs for the bike.  A good way to do this is to take them off the bike and clean them out.  There are a few posts on this board and on youtube explaining how to clean your carbs.  While you're in your carbs, you're going to want to see which jets are in place.  If two K&N filters are in place, I'm guessing they're pod filters, and to have a properly running engine, the jets would have had to have been changed from stock.

Also you'll want to check/change the oil.  If the oil has any gas in it that may have leaked in from unmaintained, overflowing carbs, then you're going to have 1) oil that is too thin, and 2) too much volume of oil and gas which will impede piston operation and result in a horribly running engine.

Regarding the bike shutting off when put into gear, make sure the kickstand isn't down. If the kickstand is up and it's still shutting off, then I'd suspect a faulty kickstand position sensor.
