this week i bought this old lady super cheap.

on paper it is a 1993 Suzuki GS500E with about 30k miles on it, the color scheme looks like it was take from a 1999 model. (got a doner bike in the deal)

has an issue where it stalls out periodically after 60 miles on the highway and after keeps stalling after a few miles.

What works ??? 😂😂
The engine goes just fine part from some weird stalling and the breaks sort of work.

what need fixing...........gonna be a long list 😆😆

front forks need a rebuild maybe even some new springs.
rear suspension needs a rebuild or replacement
The wiring loom need a replacement i have on the way from ebay if the doner is shot.
the fuel filter in the tank needs some cleaning.
the petcock will get replaced since the vacuum part is not working properly.
the lights need to get fixed or upgraded has very little light (MUCH worse the the FZ09 in the dark video)
breaks needs new pads and master cylinder either replace or rebuild kit
carbs needs to have a rebuild or the floats needs adjusting.
tires needs replacing.
frame needs repainting
fairings might swap the best from the doner and get a sticker kit.
tank needs a new paintjob
and the "dash" might need some TLC also
also the seat is a little tired

She aint a looker but gets me through the winter for now. (got it for about 200$)

My first concern is the stalling issue it has from time to time.

when going on the highway not fast (50-60mph) it will loose power and stall eventually.
often it will start up again after a few minutes.
i have checked if it was tank vacuum by opening the tank but no help there, as it will stall after a few miles again.

Atm i am tempted to think it is either the fuel filter or the floats, although some sites have claimed it might be the CDI.

Do you have to ride for one  hour before it shuts off?  Or just at 50-60 MPH?
Is it worse if you are climbing a grade (riding uphill)?

It can be tedious to sort out ignition vs fuel.

Are you running on the petcock on prime?  (The prime passage in the petcock is very small and restrictive)

When it shuts down, loosen the float bowl drain screws and see how much fuel runs out. If starved for fuel to the point it doesn't  start, it should be almost empty. (Be careful with fuel and hot engine]

If you suspect spark, bring a spare spark plug or spark plug tester with you. When the engine shuts off, quickly check for spark.

If you suspect the CDI box is getting hot and failing, find a way to cool it off quick... ice pack, compressed air, etc... see if it restarts immediately.

I just did this with a small tractor. The engine would not restart hot. It had no spark.  I took the ignition module off, put it in the freezer for a few minutes , plugged it back in and then the engine started right up!  A new module cured the problem.
Used Suzuki GS500 = motorcycle adventure without leaving the shop.

Current motorcycles: 1993 GS500E, 1996 XL1200, 1999 ST1100

thx for the tip
when it shuts off i have been riding with the petcock SET ON, the od part is that after the first stall it can stall after a few miles and keeps repeating that cycle.

did a spirited ride earlier today and it died after only going about 4 miles, did a "hard" pull from 0-about 75-80mph where it lost power and stalled.
i put it on prime and ran a few miles with the tac on 6k with out issue.

I have since flushed the fuel out of the tank and put most of it back in after cleaning the petcock. Gonna fill it up with fresh gas tonight with fuel system cleaner added for good measure.

ATM after some thinking since the post, my main bet is the fuel system might be slightly clogged in the tank. and the floats in the carbs might be off somehow.

i might have a spare CDI to test with when i get the parts bike this weekend.
