Bike want charge

I am looking at buying a 1100 virgo 1989 great price but it will not charge
it has a new battery you can charge it ride it for 100 miles it goes dead put it on charge do it all over.Ant ideas on what this might be.The owner say a regulator said it was 100 buck at the stealer ship.

Is the battery definatley new? if so it could be alternator / regulator. I recently had similar problem on my "other" bike and found a scrapyard altenator for it for next to nothing. If the bike is going for a real good price then fine, it's something you need to allow for in your maths. It would be worth asking around in your local garages/dealerships/breakers to get an idea of price and labour charges if you want them to do it before you go ahead.

I am not familiar with the bike and accesibility, but generally straightforeward replacement is not that difficult once you know the genral layout and what's what and what's where. This assumes that you have basic knowledge, confidence and tools.

If it's a Yamaha, some people might suggest that the electrics are the weak spot, others including me, might well agree! my, albeit limited, experience with the '81 XS is that if it's electrical and you can replace it then do it!

Or even simpler, could be a broken wire or bad contact in a connector.

I might be getting it for 800 buck it run strong and looks good.

all the older viragos had bad regulators, and noisy starter motors up till about 96, its a common fault
